In Round 8, the Werribee Devils Youth League Women joined the Division One Women’s team on a road trip to Craigieburn to take on the Eagles.

The girls wasted no time getting the jump on the home side, with Alex Moss, Eliza Herne and Natasha Currao all firing in the first two minutes. The lead was quickly out to double digits and the Devils were also sharp at the defensive end, with Herne and Charlotte Lord getting two blocks each. Surprisingly, the last field goal of the quarter was made with 3.29 to go, and the remaining points were from free throws. When the buzzer sounded, the Devils held a comfortable 12 point lead. Moss signalled her intentions for a big game with nine points and four rebounds in the opening quarter. Taylah Lea scored five points and three assists, and Herne also had four points. Tegan Hindle grabbed three rebounds.

The Eagles scored the first five points of the quarter and the Devils didn’t get on the board for over three minutes, when Taylah Lea nailed a long bomb. It was another three minutes before the Devils scored again, and by this time the Eagles had clawed back within three points. From this point, an 11-2 Devils run led by Lea (five points for the quarter), Lord (five points) and Moss (four points, four rebounds) allowed the visitors to level the quarter, restoring their 12-point buffer and all the Eagles work had seemingly been for nothing.

Moss continued her excellent night, scoring the first two baskets of the third quarter and extending the Devils lead. For the next few minutes the two teams traded baskets and with two minutes to go, neither team had made any ground on the scoreboard. The Devils finished the quarter with a 9-3 run, to take an 18-point lead into the last break. Moss led the way for the Devils with 10 points and four rebounds, supported by Doyle and Herne with four points each. Hayley Jones dished out two assists, while Natasha Currao and Lord had two rebounds each.

Moss got the Devils off to an excellent start in the final term answering an Eagles basket with four points of her own and pushing the margin out to 20. From there the Eagles scored 15-3 in under four minutes, bringing the margin back to eight and making the contest interesting. However, the Devils were able to pull away late in the game, and despite not scoring in the final 2.27, left with an 11-point win. Rachel Miller stepped up when she was needed, scoring seven of the Devils last nine points. For once Moss was able to play a lesser role, adding four points and four rebounds. Hindle and Currao had two assists each, while Herne grabbed two rebounds.

In Round 9, Werribee (2nd, 7-2) will host the McKinnon Cougars (6th, 3-6) at Eagle Stadium on Sunday afternoon. In their last meeting (Round 5), the Devils won 82-73.
