After their 40-point loss to Chelsea the previous week, the Werribee Devils Division One Women travelled to Craigieburn to take on the Eagles, the only team sitting below them on the ladder.
The game started slowly, with neither team gaining any advantage in the first couple of minutes. Doni Lewis and Jessica Slade got the Devils on the board and they jumped to a 9-4 lead. With four minutes remaining the score was 10-6 and the Devils went on an 8-0 run to finish the quarter and hold a double-digit lead, with Lewis, Gabby Eaton, Jackie Silcock and Nicole Greene all contributing. Lewis led the way for the Devils with six first-quarter points, while Eaton and Slade added four each. Slade also showed she was in for a good night on the boards, grabbing six rebounds.
The Devils held the ascendancy in the second quarter, maintaining their double digit lead, which at one stage was out to 17 points with two minutes remaining. Bex Van Kuyk returned from trying out for the New Zealand national team and put in four points and four rebounds for the quarter. Slade scored five points and had four rebounds, while Greene scored four points.
Natalie Stewart came out firing for the Eagles, scoring the first five points of the quarter to bring their deficit back to single-digits. Slade scored a couple of early free throws for the Devils and they proceeded to go on an impressive 19-0 run in the space of seven minutes, extending their lead to 30. Stewart ended up scoring eight of the Eagles ten points for the quarter. The Devils, on the other hand, had several important contributors. Youth League co-captain Taylah Lea jumped in and joined Slade with five points and three rebounds for the quarter. Greene also scored five, Jackie Silcock had four points and four rebounds, and Van Kuyk ruled the boards with six rebounds.
Slade and Lea scored first for the Devils in the fourth, extending the lead past 30 and they maintained this lead through the middle stages of the quarter. The Eagles managed to score six unanswered points and Kellie Bailey-Lynn landed a couple of threes in the last two minutes. In the end the Devils ran out with a dominant 27-point win. Van Kuyk stepped up with eight points and four rebounds and Eaton added five. Greene (four) and Jasmine Silcock (three) headed up the rebounds.
In Round 9, Werribee (10th, 2-7) will travel to Keilor to face off against the Thunder (9th, 3-6) on Sunday. They will be looking to improve on their last meeting (Round 3) which resulted in a 101-67 defeat.
