In Round 7 the Werribee Devils Youth League Women hosted the Camberwell Dragons in a 2nd v 3rd clash at Eagle Stadium. As well as being Mother's Day (thanks to club sponsor Werribee Station Place Florist for the roses), it also marked the Head Coaching debut of Rachelle Bellin, who stepped up in Elisha Hogan's absence.

Camberwell controlled proceedings and the Devils were in foul trouble early on, with the Dragons reaching bonus territory within the first four minutes. Halfway through the quarter the visitors led 12-4 with Eliza Herne the Devils only scorer. From there the Devils went 12-1 to finish the quarter, sneaking into the lead with 1.27 remaining.
Herne led the way with six points, two rebounds and a couple of blocks, Charlotte Lord had four points and two rebounds, while the Tegan/Teaghan combo of Hindle and Doyle ruled the boards with three rebounds each.

As the second stanza commenced, there wasn’t much scoring going on up the Devils end, at least in the early part of the quarter. Aside from a pair of free throws to Doyle, Hindle scored the Devils first field goal, a three-pointer, with 4.34 remaining. This helped to regain the lead which they had briefly lost in the middle of the quarter. Five unanswered points to the Dragons gave them a four point lead but then the Devils went on a 9-0 run of their own, thanks to contributions from Hindle, Lord and Herne. A pair of free throws to Rachel Bett in the final seconds gave the Devils a three point advantage at half time. Hindle led the Devils with seven points while Alex Moss grabbed four rebounds. There were a combined 27 fouls called in the half, the second quarter contained four lead changes and the game was tied up three times.

The Devils came out in the third quarter and produced a fantastic four minutes of basketball, during which they outscored the visitors 16-6 and opened up a double digit lead. Hayley Jones and Natasha Currao both scored five points during this time and Herne knocked down a couple of long bombs, all of which delighted the Mother’s Day crowd. Moss joined the party with 3.57 remaining, pushing the margin out to 15. Dragon Meaghan Wilson replied with a couple of baskets and neither team scored in the last three minutes, meaning the Devils led by 11 points at three-quarter time.

Camberwell scored twice through Tiarnie Ellingworth at the start of the fourth quarter, bringing the margin back to 7. But that was as close as the Dragons got, as the Devils managed to maintain their lead thanks to free throws from Currao and Lord. Hindle scored the Devils only field goal for the quarter with 2.57 remaining and the Devils left the Mother’s Day clash with a 9-point win. Hindle and Currao top scored for the Devils with three points each for the quarter, while Lord snagged five rebounds.

In Round 8, Werribee (2nd, 6-2) joins the Division One Women’s team and travels to Craigieburn to take on the Eagles (7th, 3-7) on Sunday afternoon
