In Round 6, the Werribee Devils Division One Women’s team (10th, 1-5) travelled to the Boroondara Sports Complex to take on the Hawthorn Magic (8th, 2-4). The Devils went into the match without the Conroy sisters or Elise Swan, which meant that the Youth League co-captain Taylah Lea got her first game for the season, and they also welcomed back Bex Van Kuyk, who had been averaging 16 points and 15 rebounds so far this season.

The first quarter saw the the Devils play a couple of games of catch-up, although they were never far behind. Emily Fielding (36 points for the match) kicked things off for the Magic, but was immediately answered by Bex Van Kuyk. The home side then put together seven unanswered points and built an early lead. The Devils rallied with five points from the Silcocks plus Van Kuyk and Gabby Eaton, drawing level with 4.15 to play. Fielding helped get the Magic advantage out to eight points by landing seven points late in the quarter, but a Nicole Greene three-pointer in the final seconds brought the margin back to five points at the first break. Van Kuyk started the game well with six points and four rebounds.

Greene got the Devils off to the perfect start to the second term, erasing the deficit within the first minute with five points, and the Magic took another minute to get on the board themselves. Fielding had a 12-point quarter, and she sank five unanswered points to give the momentum back to the Magic. As the two teams traded baskets it was clear the Devils had more scoring options, with Jessica Slade, Taylah Lea and Van Kuyk all chipping in. The Devils hit the lead for the first time in the game with 3.19 remaining. Five more points from Fielding gave the Magic a two point lead at half time. Van Kuyk had a quieter quarter, but Slade (eight points, two rebounds) and Greene (seven points, two rebounds) stepped up.

The home side jumped out of the blocks in the third quarter, adding seven points inside the first two minutes to race to a game-high nine point lead. The Devils first three points were free throws, and they didn’t hit a field goal until Van Kuyk landed one with 5.29 remaining in the quarter. The Devils slowly pegged back the deficit and went on an 11-0 run in the space of three minutes, briefly taking the lead. As well as contributions from Slade and Van Kuyk, Gabby Eaton jumped in and Taylah Lea made her first field goal a very valuable three-pointer. The lead changed hands several times in the closing minutes and the Magic found themselves one point ahead at the final change. Slade was the standout performer with nine points and six rebounds for the quarter.

With both teams keen for a win, the tension and pressure was palpable as the final term began. The Magic missed four shots in the opening 30 seconds and it was all too much for their coach who got themselves a tech foul. Jackie Silcock converted the resulting free throw, tying the game at 57-57. That free throw was the only score of the first three minutes of the quarter, as the Magic continued to miss before Emily Ewart hit a couple of free throws and Aimee Page nailed a three-pointer, giving the Magic some breathing space. Van Kuyk and Fielding traded baskets for a while before Doni Lewis got involved and scored five points in quick time, bringing the margin back to one. When Van Kuyk hit some free throws and Greene added another basket, the Devils found themselves up by three points with 1.17 on the clock! Magic’s Nicole Swan hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 72-72 and Fielding had a chance to win it with a couple of free throws but missed both, sending the game into overtime. Van Kuyk (eight points, four rebounds) and Lewis (five points, four rebounds) had big quarters, while Slade chipped in with three assists and a block.

Doni Lewis (six points in OT) kicked things off for the Devils, who led the extra time period right up until Cahlia Haslam nailed a big three-pointer with 30 seconds to go, to put the Magic two points ahead. Lewis stayed cool under immense pressure, sinking both her free throws with eight seconds remaining and forcing a second overtime period.

In contrast to the first overtime, this time it was the Magic who got off to the better start, racing to a five point lead thanks to Haslam and Natalie Vergara. Jasmine Silcock jumped in and dragged the Devils back into the game with four points in quick time and when Van Kuyk made two free throws with 1.44 on the clock, there was just one point the difference. Both teams had their chances in the final minute but no one could get a shot in, resulting in a 91-90 victory to the Hawthorn Magic.

In Round 7, the Devils will host the Chelsea Gulls at Eagle Stadium on Saturday night.
