In Round 7 the Werribee Devils Youth League Men’s team had a double header. Their first game was against the Geelong Supercats on Saturday night. Their previous meeting was the season opener at Eagle Stadium which resulted in an 83-61 win to the Devils.

It was clear from the start that despite the contrasting ladder positions and the previous result, the Devils were not going to have it all their own way. The opening quarter was hard-fought. The two teams were never separated by more than four points and the lead changed five times. The Supercats led by two at the break as the normally high-scoring Devils were held scoreless for the final 90 seconds of the quarter. Mitch Alush led the Devils with five points and Bubby Luxford snatched two steals and three rebounds.

The Devils failed to score in the opening 3.15 of the second term but the Supercats failed to take full advantage, scoring five unanswered points to take a seven point lead early on. Finally Alush got the Devils on the board and was joined by TJ Remy and Luxford, and at the half way mark of the quarter there was just four points the difference. The scoring again dried up, with just one Supercats basket in a three minute period. The home side then went on a 6-0 run and Thomas Pupavac added five more points late in the quarter to achieve a double digit margin. Zac Latham scored at the death to bring the half time margin back to eight points in favour of the Supercats. TJ Remy led the Devils with six points and two rebounds, Alush added four points and two rebounds while Luxford had four rebounds.

Sticking to the pattern of the game, the third quarter also started slowly. Max Kos scored first for the Supercats but it would be another three minutes before they scored again, and the Devils missed their first six shots of the quarter before Alush broke through followed by three points from Josh Tang. The Devils started to get on top: five points from Remy followed by a basket from Jesse Harberger finished a 12-4 run and meant scores were level at 42-42 at the halfway mark of the quarter. The two teams traded baskets for a while and the Devils finally hit the lead with 2.29 remaining on the back of seven straight points from Alush. The Devils completed a 25-10 third term and went into the last break with a seven point lead. Remy and Alush had nine points and three rebounds each, Harberger added four points and two rebounds while Josh Zamperoni had five rebounds.

The Devils opened the scoring through Alush and Harberger, and the visitors controlled the rest of the game. The Supercats snuck within five points, but their scoring dried up and they scored their last field goal with 3.16 remaining. The Devils scored seven of the last nine points to run out with a hard-earned 11-point win. Zamperoni scored seven points for the quarter, supported by Alush (six points, four rebounds) and Remy (five points, three rebounds), while Luxford contributed two assists and three rebounds.

After their win against the Supercats, the Devils returned to Eagle Stadium to face the Hume City Broncos in Liam Paul’s 50th Big V game.

Being Mother’s Day, the day carried extra significance and this Devils team contains some of the most devoted and passionate basketball mums going around. In a nice touch, Niddrie Flowers provided a rose for each player to give to his mother and the mums joined the players on the court for the National Anthem (which was accidentally turned into “Eye of the Tiger” for a couple of seconds by a certain journo/court announcer/stats guy). It was a great way to honour and respect the contribution of mothers to their kids sporting endeavours and, indeed, all areas of life.

The Devils, led by five points to Mitch Alush, jumped to a 9-0 lead inside the first two minutes. The Broncos overcame this initial onslaught and scored eight of the next ten points thanks to big men Shaun Prasad and Pat Daley. With the score at 11-8, neither team scored for the next two minutes before Bubby Luxford and Josh Tang both scored in quick time. The Broncos scored the next four points to creep within three, before TJ Remy and Mangar Manyang got on the board. When the quarter- time buzzer sounded, the Devils had a four point lead. Remy (six points) and Alush (five points, two steals, two rebounds) led the way. The Devils also won the rebounds 16-9, with Manyang (4), Jesse Harberger (3) and Luxford (3) featuring prominently.

The Devils once again started well, outscoring the Broncos 14-4 in the first five minutes. Dylan Harberger and Josh Tang set the tone with consecutive three- pointers. The Broncos took three minutes to score a field goal, and in that time Alush, Manyang and Tang all added to the Devils total. By the halfway mark of the quarter the margin was out to 15 points. The next five minutes were all about maintaining that lead, which they did, and the home side went into half time with a 13 point buffer. Manyang scored six points and had three rebounds, Tang added five, while Luxford had two rebounds and two assists to go with four points.

The Broncos opened with the first two baskets of the second half before Tang hit back with five consecutive points. Travis Dale and D Harberger made free throws and then Dale and Josh Zamperoni were successful from long range. For the Broncos, Daley, Prasad and Hayden Pinder were doing their best to keep their team in the game but the Devils lead stretched out to 22 before a couple of late baskets to the visitors brought the margin back to 18 at the final break. Tang top scored for the Devils with seven points for the quarter while Dale and Zamperoni both had five. Zac Latham showed spirit and aggression, and grabbed three rebounds.

The Broncos were determined not to go down without a fight and launched a mini-comeback, scoring the first seven points of the quarter to get within 11 points. However, they were stopped in their tracks by 50th game player Liam Paul who delivered a big three pointer just when his team needed it. The Devils maintained their double digit lead until a 10-2 run from the Broncos brought them within six points with 1.18 left in the game. A score from Luxford and a three-pointer from J Harberger ensured the Devils would celebrate a successful Mother’s Day with a 9-point win. There were no standouts for the Devils and seven players got on the scoresheet. Paul and J Harberger led the Devils with three points each, while Luxford snatched a couple of steals and had two assists.

In Round 8, the Devils (2nd, 8-2) host the Warrandyte Venom (5th, 4-3) at Eagle Stadium on Saturday night.
