In Round 5, the Werribee Devils Youth League One Men's team (1st 5-1) and the Whittlesea Pacers (2nd, 5-1) met in a top-of-the-table clash at Eagle Stadium. The opening term was tightly contested, with barely anything separating the two sides. The Devils led narrowly early on but the Pacers fought back and, with scores tied at 11, neither side scored for two minutes in the middle of the quarter. The lead continued to change hands, then baskets from Josh Tang and Mangar Manyang in the last 20 seconds gave the Devils a four point lead at quarter time. Manyang had 9 points (including 5/6 free throws) and two blocks for the quarter, supported by Mitch Alush (six points) and Jesse Harberger (four rebounds and two blocks).
Tang and Cam Hutton got the Devils off to a great start with baskets inside the first minute of the second term, and the eight-point advantage would turn out to be their biggest lead of the game. Once again the Pacers fought back and their biggest lead was three, but a Liam Paul three-pointer swung the game back the Devils way. Manyang again scored at the buzzer putting the home side six points up at the main break. Hutton led the Devils with five points, while Harberger and Tang had four each 4. Manyang (six) and Paul (three) led the Devils rebounding.
The Devils went into the second half without Jesse Harberger, who had looked set for a big one with six points and five rebounds in 12 minutes before being injured. Whittlesea scored the first eight points of the third quarter to wrestle the lead back inside the first three minutes. The Devils recovered with baskets to Hutton and Manyang and led for the rest of the quarter, until an Aaron Kearing jump shot in the last ten seconds tied the game at 62-62 at three-quarter time. Leading scorers for the quarter were Alush (seven) and Hutton (six), while Manyang had four rebounds and Kodi Opetaia had three.
Neither team scored in the first minute, then a Tang free throw put the Devils up by one. Unfortunately for the home side that was as good as it got. A few seconds later Thomas Cairns sank a three-pointer and the Pacers led for the rest of the game. With 2.52 remaining the Pacer lead was eight points, but a Tang three-pointer and an Alush basket kept the Devils in it. The margin was just two with 0.24 left in the game, but four points to Aidan Zeverona gave the Pacers a six point win, 88-82. Manyang finished off a big game with six points and three rebounds for the quarter, while Alush and Tang both put in four points each.
