In Round 6, the Werribee Devils Youth League Women (2nd, 5-1) hosted their western suburbs rivals Altona Gators (4th, 2-3).
The Devils jumped out of the blocks, racing to a 9-2 lead within the first three minutes of the match thanks to Teaghan Doyle (4), Taylah Lea (3) and Alex Moss (2). As often happens with fast starts, the adrenaline soon wore off and the Gators worked their way back into the match, sneaking within one point with a couple of minutes to play. Baskets to Tegan Hindle and Hayley Jones stretched the quarter-time margin to five points, 17-12 in favour of the home side. Moss (six points, three rebounds) and Doyle (four points) both made good starts for the Devils.
The second quarter started disastrously for the Devils. The first six minutes yielded eleven missed shots, four fouls and four turnovers as the Gators went on a 10-0 streak and took control of the game. Moss finally got the Devils on the board with 4.18 remaining and it was her team’s turn to wrestle back control. A 14-6 run finished the quarter with a rush and they went into half time with a three point lead. Moss and Doyle both scored four points for the Devils, and Moss added three rebounds.
The Devils, no doubt determined to avoid a repeat of their start to the second term, struck the first blow of the second half through Doyle, then Eliza Herne jumped in and added to the home side’s scoreline. Neither team scored for the next three minutes, and then the two sides traded baskets and the Devils continued to hold onto a narrow lead. A 7-0 Gator run gave them the lead briefly with a minute to go but a Doyle basket tied the score at 46-46, and that was the scenario at the final break. Doyle continued to lead from the front with seven points for the quarter, while Natasha Currao stepped up with four points as well as a couple of steals and assists.
In the end, the three-quarter time margin was as close as the Devils got. The Gators controlled the final quarter without dominating it, and gradually extended their lead out to double digits. A couple of revealing stats: the Gators outscored the Devils in the paint 40-22 and their bench scored 41 points compared to 11 bench points from the Devils. Take from that what you will.
Despite the result, neither team changed ladder positions. In Round 7 Werribee (2nd, 5-2) will host the Camberwell Dragons (3rd, 4-3) on Sunday afternoon. They last met in Round 4 and in that encounter the Dragons got up in a close one, 52-50.
