In Round 5, the Werribee Devils Youth League One Women’s team (2nd, 4-1) came away with a victory against the McKinnon Cougars (4th, 2-2)

The home side started better, scoring the first four points, before the Devils answered with a Taylah Lea three-pointer. The Cougars led for the first five minutes but the Devils turned it around, an 8-0 run in the last two minutes of the quarter pushing the lead out to double digits. The Devils had several players contributing early on, which was a good sign. Eliza Herne led Devils scorers with six points and was joined by Teaghan Doyle (five points, three rebounds) and Charlotte Lord (five points, three assists, four steals). Alex Moss also jumped in with four points and two assists, while Natasha Currao dished three assists and grabbed two rebounds.

The 10-point quarter time lead would prove to be the difference in the game, as the final three quarters were fairly even. The Devils maintained their double digit lead throughout the second quarter, though both teams had the ascendancy at different stages. The Devils outscored the home side 14-5 through the middle part of the quarter as the lead edged toward 20, but the Cougars finished strong with an 11-4 run, giving them some confidence heading into half time. The Devils only scored five field goals for the quarter, compared to the Cougars 10, but 12-of-14 free throws kept the Devils on top. Alex Moss had a HUGE quarter with 14 points (including 8-of-8 FT) and three rebounds, while Herne was the other main contributor with five points and two assists.

After a quiet second term, Natasha Currao got the Devils going in the third, with a three-pointer in the first 20 seconds. Soon after, Moss nailed another basket and things were looking dangerous for the Cougars. However, the home side generally controlled proceedings for the majority of the quarter and by the last break had managed to whittle the margin down to single digits. Currao led the Devils with seven points for the quarter, while Moss had four points and four rebounds.

With all the momentum, the Cougars kept on coming in the final term, and the Devils were in danger of letting this one slip. When Tailah Ross landed a three-pointer with 2.51 remaining, the margin was just three points. However, four Devils baskets in the next 90 seconds, thanks to Moss, Currao and Lord, managed to put the game out of McKinnon’s reach, resulting in an 82-73 win to the Devils. Moss and Lord scored four points each for the Devils, while Doyle gave out three assists and Moss and Currao nabbed a couple of steals each.
