In Mitch Alush and Josh Zamperoni’s 50th Big V game, the Werribee Devils Youth League Men hosted the Warrandyte Venom.

Just like the previous week, the Devils jumped out to a 9-0 lead inside the first two minutes. Jesse Harberger (four points, four rebounds) and Bubby Luxford (six points, three rebounds) were in the thick of the action early on. And again just like last week, after the initial sting, their opposition reeled them in and levelled the contest. Mangar Manyang came on and made an impact in the second half of the quarter with six points, but the Venom stayed with them, going goal-for-goal most of the quarter and scores were tied at quarter-time.

Dylan Harberger and TJ Remy fired up for the Devils at the start of the second term. Although the Devils maintained a narrow lead, the score was tied six times and the biggest run from either team was five points. In contrast to the first term, the Devils had seven players on the scoresheet in the second, led by Alush with eight points, while J Harberger and Luxford had five each. D Harberger was strong on the defensive end with three steals.

Things turned around for the Venom in the third quarter. Zachary Stevenson and Taylor Hayton (12 points for the quarter) gave them the lead back in quick time, which they held for nine out of ten minutes for the quarter. An 18-2 Venom streak in the first five minutes resulted in a double digit lead for the visitors. A 10-2 run by the Devils in the middle stages, led by D Harberger (5), Josh Tang and Remy, got the Devils back in the game but three consecutive baskets late in the quarter led to a nine-point Venom lead at the final break. The teams were playing two different styles of game and the Venom were coming out on top. The Devils opted for an outside game, shooting 7/23 (including 3/12 three-pointers), while the Venom shot 15/25, including 24 points in the paint.
Remy led the Devils scoring with six points, while D Harberger had five points and three rebounds

Remy fired a long bomb to get the Devils going in the final term, and was immediately answered by Hayton. Both teams only scored one more field goal in the first five minutes, and Venom got out to a 10-point lead with 4.23 left in the game. Alush dragged the Devils back in the game with the next eight points and both teams traded baskets. When Alush drained a three-pointer with thirty seconds on the clock, the Devils were down by just two points. However a couple of Venom free throws put the game out of reach and then a last second Venom lay-up made the final result six points in favour of the visitors. Alush ended up with 11 points and two steals for the quarter, supported by J Harberger with four points and five rebounds. Luxford (three assists) and Kodi Opetaia (three rebounds) also contributed well.

In Round 9, Werribee (3rd, 8-3) will travel down the road on Sunday to take on Altona (1st, 10-1) for the second time this season. Their last meeting was in Round 2 at Eagle Stadium and the Gators won 101-89.
