Jackie Silcock, 18 points, 4 rebounds
Nicole Greene, 17 points, 3 rebounds
Doni Lewis, 6 points, 5 rebounds
Jasmine Silcock, 3 points, 4 rebounds
Jenna Conroy, 3 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists
In Round 5, the Werribee Devils Division One Women’s team (9th, 1-4) hosted the Mildura Heat (2nd, 3-1). They entered the game without Centre Bex Van Kuyk, who has made a great start to her debut season for the Devils, averaging 16 points and 15 rebounds per game.
The first quarter was an even contest, with neither side getting any real control over the game. The Heat led for most of the time but the Devils stayed with them, going into quarter time down 11-16. Jackie Silcock and Nicole Greene scored four points each for the quarter, while Jessica Slade grabbed seven rebounds and Jenna Conroy had four.
The first six minutes of the second quarter yielded an 18-3 run to the Heat, blowing the margin out to 20 points. The Devils levelled up somewhat in the remainder of the quarter, but trailed 24-40 at half time. Slade did a great job filling the hole left by Van Kuyk’s absence, and had a huge quarter with 10 points and three rebounds, while the Conroy sisters also grabbed three rebounds each.
The third quarter started much the same as the second, with an 11-2 start for the Heat pushing the margin out even further. However, the Devils refused to roll over, and a Silcock three-pointer sparked a 10-1 Devils streak in the space of 90 seconds to get some respectability back on the scoreboard. Having scored just 24 points in the first half, the home side got their shooting form back and poured in 26 points in the third quarter alone, thanks to eight from Silcock and Slade, and seven points from Greene. Gabby Eaton also grabbed three rebounds and two assists. Unfortunately for them the Heat scored 29, meaning no inroads were made into their deficit.
In the final term the two teams traded baskets but the Devils could not get any closer than the 19-point three-quarter time margin, going down 70-93. Incredibly, the Devils outrebounded the Heat 17-4 (Slade 7, Doni Lewis and Jasmine Silcock 3). Greene led the Devils scorers with six points, while Silcock, Lewis and Slade had four points each.
