In Round 15, The Werribee Devils Youth League Women (3rd, 10-5) took on the Craigieburn Eagles (6th, 5-11). It was a special night for two reasons, with co-captain Taylah Lea playing her 100th Big V game and we also held our "Pink Night", fundraising and raising awareness for the McGrath Foundation

Alex Moss was judged as the MVP for the "Pink Night" game, pictured here with WBA life member Dave Abel.

The Eagles got on the board first thanks to Moore, but the early stages of the game belonged to the Devils, who had no shortage of contributors. Charlotte Vincent-Lord, Alex Moss, Taylah Lea, Natasha Currao, Rachel Miller and Eliza Herne all helped give the Devils a 14-5 lead in the first seven minutes. The Eagles bounced back with an 8-2 run late in the quarter, getting within three points at quarter time. Miller and Moss both had four points, Vincent-Lord grabbed four rebounds and Currao was busy with two assists and two steals.

The Eagles levelled the game within the first minute thanks to Stewart and Watt. However, a 21-3 Devils run blew the margin out to 18 with three minutes remaining. Hindle, Thomas Vincent-Lord and Moss were the main contributors. Stewart and Moore then combined for six unanswered points, getting the Eagles back within 12 points, before Moss and Currao struck back. A Moore basket inside the last minute meant the halftime margin was 14 in favour of the Devils. The Devils had several contributors. Vincent-Lord dominated with
10 points, three rebounds and two steals.and was supported by Moss who put in seven points and had two steals. Herne grabbed four rebounds, Currao had three rebounds and two steals and Jenna Thomas gave away a couple of assists.

Neither team scored in the first two minutes of the third quarter, but the Eagles started better with a 6-2 run reducing the margin to 9 points. Lea, Currao and Moss helped maintain the Devils ascendancy, but with three minutes to go the Eagles went on a streak of their own. Moore, Watt, Wain and Cranston combined to get the Eagles within four points close to three-quarter time. A Currao basket in the final seconds gave the Devils a six point lead at the final break.
Currao (five points) and Moss (four points, three rebounds) led the Devils scorers and were helped out by Lea (three rebounds, two assists), Vincent-Lord (three rebounds) and Herne (four rebounds).

The Devils had a fight on their hands when the Eagles scored the first five points of the final term, getting them within one point halfway through the quarter. Steph Pyke kicked the Devils into action, with her basket starting an 11-0 run over two minutes, giving the Devils some breathing space. Stewart and Wakefield got the Eagles back within eight points but that was as close as they got, with Hindle and Vincent-Lord scoring in the final minute, ensuring a hard-fought 67-55 victory.
Vincent-Lord finished strongly with seven points and two rebounds and Lea scored three points and had three rebounds. Herne and Moss controlled the boards, both grabbing five rebounds and Tegan Hindle snatched a couple of steals.

After their win against Craigieburn the previous night, the Werribee Devils Youth League Women travelled down the highway to take on the Corio Bay Stingrays (8th, 3-13). The Devils won both their previous matches, 59-44 in Round 1 and 85-81 in Round 11.

The Devils got off to a slow start, trailing 8-1 after five minutes of play. Eliza Herne scored as she was fouled and converted the bonus, and this got the Devils into gear, with Taylah Lea, Alex Moss and Natasha Currao all scoring soon after. With 2.36 remaining scores were back level. The Stingrays edged ahead again through Reid and Jordan, but a Herne basket just before quarter time got the Devils within two points at the first break. Herne (five points) and Currao (three) led the Devils scoring, while Moss grabbed four rebounds and Lea was busy with two assists and three steals.

Jenna Thomas scored first for the Devils but that was all for a while, as the Stingrays piled on 11 unanswered points in three minutes to take a double digit lead. Then, just as suddenly as it started, the Stingrays scoring dried up and they only scored a single free throw for the rest of quarter. The Devils slowly started to work their way back into the game. Charlotte Vincent-Lord hit a three, followed by baskets from Moss and Currao. Herne and Currao then got the Devils back within one point and neither side could score in the last minute, making that single point the half time margin. Currao had four points and three rebounds, supported by Vincent-Lord with three points. Doyle contributed two assists and two rebounds, while Moss nabbed a couple of steals.

Vincent-Lord scored first for the Devils with a three-pointer, giving her side the lead for the first time in the match. A basket from Stingray Hanna was answered by Moss and from this point the Devils wouldn’t give up the lead for the rest of the match. The lead remained single-digits throughout the quarter, as Vincent-Lord asserted her dominance with 10 points and three rebounds. The margin at three-quarter time was five points, meaning it was still anyone’s game, but the Devils would have been happy with their ability to take control of the contest despite having to play catch-up a couple of times. Aside from Vincent-Lord, Moss scored four points, Miller grabbed three rebounds and Lea gave away two assists and had two blocks and two rebounds.

The first score of the final term was a free throw to Stingray’s Tatlock, bringing them within four points, but that was as close as they got. An 8-0 run with contributions from Herne, Moss, Currao and Vincent-Lord got the margin out to 13 with 3.40 to play. From there the Devils kept the Stingrays at arm’s length and finished with a 13-point win, completing a successful double-header weekend. Moss, Vincent-Lord and Currao each scored four points, Doyle had three points and five rebounds and Miller also grabbed three rebounds.

The Devils (3rd, 12-5) appear to have copped the rough end of the stick with the draw, facing another double-header in Round 16, firstly at home against the Altona Gators (2nd, 13-4), then away the next day against the Coburg Giants (4th, 9-7).
