In Round 14 the Werribee Devils Youth League Men (3rd, 11-6) hosted the Sunbury Jets (5th, 9-6). The Devils won their Round 6 encounter 95-84
It was clear from the start that this would be a closely fought contest. In the first term neither team led by more than four points. The Devils led by four with three minutes remaining before the Jets scored seven unanswered points in the space of a couple of minutes and led 19-17 at quarter time. Josh Zamperoni had a big quarter with six points and two blocks and Mangar Manyang scored five points and grabbed four rebounds.
The Devils took a while to get going in the second term. The Jets scored the first six points before Jesse Harberger got the home side on the board. Bubby Luxford and Josh Tang joined him soon after, but Collins, Loncaric and Lemon were causing problems up the other end. The Jets lead got out to ten points with four minutes to go before Manyang, Zamperoni and Liam Paul pulled the Devils back to within four points with a couple of minutes to go. Jet Marshall landed two three-pointers in the final minute to give the visitors an eight-point half time lead. Paul and Tang had five points each for the Devils, while Manyang had three points and four rebounds, and Harberger contributed two blocks and two rebounds.
Manyang struck first for the Devils in the second half but then the Jets outscored the Devils 12-2 in the first couple of minutes to open up a 16-point lead. Mitch Alush came to life with five points in 20 seconds before Jet Bulluss scored as he was fouled and converted the bonus. Alush and Luxford combined to briefly bring the margin back to single digits but were countered by Darmanin with a three-pointer. With three minutes remaining the Devils flicked a switch and unleashed an onslaught. Alush scored nine consecutive points in a minute and was joined by Harberger and Luxford, as the Devils went on a 14-0 run to take an unlikely lead with 40 seconds left in the quarter. Marshall scored two free throws for the Jets, tying the scores at 64-64 at three quarter time and setting up an exciting final term. Alush had a HUGE quarter, with 15 points, two rebounds and two steals. Luxford had seven points and had three rebounds, Zamperoni grabbed seven rebounds and Harberger had two blocks and four rebounds.
Zac Latham opened the scoring for the Devils and the home side had the better of the contest in the early stages. After four minutes the Devils lead was out to seven points, with Tang, Luxford, Harberger and Zamperoni all getting on the board. However, a 9-2 Jets run over the next three minutes tied the game up with 2.30 remaining. Tang and Zamperoni scored for the Devils but were answered by Witmitz and Collins up the other end. Heading into the final minute the Devils held a one point lead. Luxford, Tang and Travis Dale all had free throw opportunities to put the game out of reach for the Jets but could only manage 1 of 6. Up the other end Williams made a free throw and Loncaric made a field goal, putting the Jets in the lead with twenty seconds remaining. The Devils called a timeout and had the final play but could not manage the game-winning basket, meaning the Jets got up by one point, 85-84. Zamperoni led the Devils with five points and three rebounds for the quarter, Harberger and Tang both had four points and Luxford had four rebounds and two assists.
The loss saw the Devils (11-7) slip to 5th and in Round 15 they travel to take on the Whittlesea Pacers (2nd, 14-4). Their previous showdown in Round 5 went the way of the Pacers, 88-82
