In Round 16, the Werribee Devils Division One Women (10th, 3-14) travelled down the highway to take on the Geelong Supercats (2nd, 13-4). They were looking to improve on their previous result from Round 11, which was a 91-52 win to Geelong.

Jackie Silcock got the Devils off to a good start, scoring five points in the first two minutes of the match. Bex Van Kuyk and Jasmine Silcock joined in and the Devils held a narrow lead in the early stages. With three minutes remaining, former Devils Louise Johnston and Georgia Tauschke combined with Varley to get the Supercats in front by six. Jessica Slade and Nicole Greene scored in the last minute and the Devils went into quarter time trailing by five, 24-19. Van Kuyk (five points, three rebounds) and Jackie Silcock (five points) led the Devils, supported by Slade (four points, two rebounds)
and Greene (three points, two rebounds).

Jasmine Silcock and Greene scored early on for the Devils, but the Supercats went on a 9-0 run through the middle stages, resulting in a 13-point lead. The Devils fought back late in the quarter, with Van Kuyk, Slade and Jackie Silcock all contributing to a 12-3 run, which got the Devils within three points at half time. Van Kuyk (six points, five rebounds, two assists) and Slade (six points, six rebounds) both had big quarters. Greene chipped in with five points and Doni Lewis had three assists.

The scoring dried up for both teams early in the third quarter, with the first field goal coming from Louise Johnston with 5.42 remaining. The Devils didn’t hit the scoreboard until four minutes into the quarter, courtesy of Slade and Lewis free throws. The Supercats put in ten consecutive points through the middle stages of the quarter and all of a sudden the lead was out to 16. Lewis (seven points) led a late Devils fightback scoring six of the Devils nine points over the last two minutes to get the margin back to single digits. A Dorning basket gave the Supercats a nine–point lead at the last break, and the Devils were still in the contest. Van Kuyk grabbed six rebounds.

Early baskets from Van Kuyk and Slade got the Devils within seven points, but that was as close as they got. The Supercats were able to keep the Devils at arm’s length, with a 6-0 run getting the margin out to 14 inside the last two minutes. Jackie Silcock, Greene and Lewis combined for seven of the last nine points and they managed to level the quarter, giving the Supercats a 79-70 win.
Slade (five points, five rebounds, two assists) and Lewis (five points) stepped up for the Devils and Van Kuyk contributed four points and three rebounds.

There are now just two games remaining in the Devils season. In Round 17 they host the Sunbury Jets (1st, 17-0), and finish off with a road trip to Mildura (7th, 7-11).
