In Round 15 the Werribee Devils Division One Women (10th, 3-13) hosted the Craigieburn Eagles (11th, 2-14). The Devils won their previous match 78-51 back in Round 8.
It was a special night at Eagle Stadium, with the annual "Pink Night" fundraiser for the McGrath Foundation, raising money and awareness for breast cancer research.
The Eagles had an early four point lead, but that was as big as the margin got in the first term. Bex Van Kuyk (10 points, eight rebounds) and Nicole Greene (four points, two rebounds, two steals) got on the board early, and neither team managed to score for two minutes in the middle stages. The two teams went goal for goal, and Van Kuyk scored the Devils last eight points. A Van Kuyk free throw with a minute to go gave them a 16-14 lead, and that was the score at quarter time.
Doni Lewis scored first for the Devils in the second term, but then there was a four minute scoring drought before Jasmine Silcock got on the scoresheet. The Eagles had several contributors, including Stewart, Cameron and Campbell. Greene and Van Kuyk both scored in the final minute but it was a disappointing term for the Devils, scoring just eight points, and conceding a 13-point margin at the long break.
Things didn’t get much better for the Devils in the third quarter. Van Kuyk (four points, six rebounds) got a basket in the opening minute, but their next score wasn’t until 1.41 remaining. By this time the Eagles lead had extended to 23, before Taylah Lea, Van Kuyk and Jackie Silcock (three points) all scored for the Devils in the final minute. After scoring 16 points in the opening term, the visitors scored just 17 in the next two quarters. Nicole Greene grabbed three rebounds.
Once again Van Kuyk (four points, five rebounds) kicked things off for the Devils and was immediately answered by Neill. Greene and Jackie Silcock both nailed three-pointers, getting the Devils within 12 points. Stewart and Lea traded baskets and Van Kuyk added two more. A Kirsty Neeves free throw with 3.47 remaining turned out to be the last Devils score as the Eagles finished with the last eight points and took a convincing 69-46 victory.
In Round 16 the Devils (10th, 3-14) travel down the highway to take on the Geelong Supercats (2nd, 13-4), and will be hoping for a better showing than the 91-52 beating they took in Round 11.
