In Round 12, the Werribee Devils Youth League Women (2nd, 9-3) hosted the McKinnon Cougars (7th, 4-10). The two teams have met twice during the season so far and the Devils won both, 82-73 in Round 5 and 87-58 in Round 9.

The first quarter was an even contest and was literally goal-for-goal until the last two minutes. Alex Moss starred for the Devils early on, scoring six of their first eight points and adding four rebounds. Two Cougar baskets in the last 30 seconds gave the visitors a three point lead at quarter time. Charlotte Vincent-Lord grabbed three rebounds, while Tegan Hindle added two rebounds and two assists.

The Devils came out roaring in the second quarter, outscoring the Cougars 16-2 in the first five minutes and helping themselves to a double digit lead. Five Devils contributed during this time, including Rachel Miller, Natasha Currao, Jenna Thomas, Vincent-Lord and Taylah Lea. The Cougars attempted a couple of comebacks but were thwarted each time by the hungry Devils. Inside the last two minutes the visitors finally broke through, scoring eight of the last ten points (including six from Ellen Parry) to get within five points at half time. The Devils had several contributors for the quarter. Vincent-Lord and Currao led the scoring with five points each, followed by Miller and Teaghan Doyle with four. Miller and Thomas also had three rebounds, while Vincent-Lord nabbed two steals.

Emma Crees stood up for the Cougars, scoring their first eight points of the quarter and helping them draw level for a brief period. Moss, Eliza Herne and Hindle fought back for the Devils, giving them some breathing space. The Devils did enough to maintain a single digit lead throughout the quarter, and scores to Vincent-Lord and Hindle in the last 30 seconds meant the home side held an eight point advantage heading into the last quarter. Vincent Lord led the Devils with six points for the quarter and Moss had five points and two rebounds. Doyle also played a big role with four points, four rebounds and three assists.

Both sides started slowly in the final quarter. The Cougars scored the first five points before Moss finally got the Devils on the board after four minutes of play. Herne and Hindle soon followed, and the Devils were able to keep the Cougars at arm’s length. The visitors did manage to get within four points with three minutes to play, but five unanswered points from Herne and Vincent-Lord gave the Devils the space they needed to walk away with a 10-point win, 75-65. Herne led the Devils in the last quarter with five points and three rebounds. Currao and Vincent-Lord added three points each, while Vincent-Lord also had two rebounds and two assists. Moss grabbed four rebounds and Hindle gave away a couple of assists and had two rebounds.

In Round 13 the Devils (2nd, 10-3) host the Warrandyte Venom (1st, 12-2) on Saturday night. They are now a game clear in second after Altona was upset by Coburg in a one-point thriller.
