In Round 11, the Werribee Devils Youth League Men had a road trip double header. On Saturday night they travelled to Keysborough to take on the Cougars. Their previous matchup was in Round 4 and the Devils won it 100-79.

Jesse Harberger showed he was in for a big night, scoring seven points in the first three minutes as the Devils skipped out to an early 10-3 lead. Nine Devils got on the scoreboard as they increased their lead and led by as much as 20 before a Cougars basket in the last ten seconds made it 27-9 at quarter-time. The Devils had several good contributors. Harberger scored nine points and had two rebounds and he was assisted by Josh Zamperoni with four points, three rebounds and two assists.
Mitch Alush had two assists and four rebounds, Travis Dale had three steals while Kodi Opetaia (three) and Mangar Manyang (four) led the rebounds.

The Devils blitzed their opponents early in the second quarter, scoring ten unanswered points in the first four minutes thanks to TJ Remy, Manyang and Josh Tang. This opened up a 28-point lead and for the rest of the quarter it was goal-for-goal. The Devils went into half time with a 27 point lead, led by Zamperoni with five points and four rebounds for the quarter. Alush had four points, two assists and two steals, Bubby Luxford added two rebounds and three assists while Zac Latham grabbed three rebounds.

The Cougars launched a great comeback in the third quarter, outscoring the Devils 21-7 in the first six minutes and all of a sudden it was just 13 points the difference. However, the Devils bounced back and finished the quarter with a 14-2 run through contributions from Alush (five points, two rebounds), Harberger (four points, six rebounds), Remy and Latham, which pushed the three-quarter time margin back out to 25. Luxford also had four points and Manyang had three rebounds.

The Devils did enough in the final term to maintain their advantage and ran out with a comfortable win. The Cougars scored seven unanswered points early on and got the margin down to 20. But that’s as close as they got, with the Devils answering every challenge and winning by 29. Travis Dale stepped up with seven points for the quarter, while Opetaia and Tang had four points each. Liam Paul was lively and added two assists and four rebounds, while Latham and Manyang grabbed four rebounds each.

After their win against Keysborough the previous night, the Werribee Devils Youth League Men travelled to Ballarat to take on the Miners. They met in Round 3 and the Devils had a 108-62 victory.

Just like the night before, the Devils got off to a fast start, and this proved to be the difference in the match. The Harberger boys scored first for the Devils – a three-pointer from Dylan quickly followed by a basket from Jesse. James Reeves answered for the Miners, but it would be more than five minutes before they would score again. In that time the Devils put in eight points, six of them from Mitch Alush, as the Devils quickly built a double-digit lead. Once again the Devils had an even spread of scorers. As well as his six points, Alush also had three steals, J Harberger had two rebounds and two blocks in addition to his four points. Liam Paul, Kodi Opetaia, Josh Tang and D Harberger all contributed three points each and TJ Remy grabbed three rebounds.

Tang and J Harberger got the Devils off to a good start and when Dale added a three pointer inside the first two minutes it was not looking good for the Miners. The Devils would not score for another five minutes but the Miners were unable to take advantage, only managing six points of their own. The Devils then scored 8-2 in the last three minutes to once again increase their lead to 18 at half time. Alush scored four points and had two rebounds for the quarter and Dale had three points. D Harberger gave away a couple of assists and there were plenty of contributors on the boards, led by J Harberger (five), Zac Latham (four) and Mangar Manyang (three).

The third quarter brought more bad news for the Miners. Liam Paul scored straight away and then Tang hit eight points (including two three-pointers) without the Miners scoring. Once they warmed up, the home side went on a 15-5 run through the middle stages of the quarter, briefly getting the margin below 20. Alush then scored 10 points in the final three minutes of the quarter, pushing the Devils three-quarter time lead out to 22. In addition to Alush’s dominant performance, which included two rebounds and three steals, Tang had eight points and two assists and Paul gave away three assists.

The final term saw Ross Weightman trying to have a one-man shootout with the Devils. He scored the Miners first ten points for the quarter over six minutes. In that time the Devils scored 14, including four from Latham and Luxford, and three from Remy. With under four minutes to go the Miners scored eight consecutive points to bring the margin back to 20 but in a case of déjà vu, Alush again stepped up late in the quarter and scored six out of the Devils eight unanswered points to blow the margin back to close to 30. Two free throws in the final seconds to the Miners gave the Devils a 26-point victory. Remy added five points for the Devils, while Paul snatched three rebounds.

State of Play: The Youth League Men One division is a 12-team competition and has a final six. After Round 11, the Devils have played 15 of their 22 games for the season and are currently sitting third on the ladder with 11 wins and 4 losses.

The Road Ahead: In their remaining seven games, the Devils play Camberwell (7th), Warrandyte (5th), Sunbury (4th), Whittlesea (2nd), Hume City (10th), Coburg (6th) and Bendigo (8th).

After the Queen's Birthday break, the Devils next game is at home against the Camberwell Dragons on Saturday June 18th. They last played each other in Round 2, and the Devils won 91-85.
