In Round 11, the Werribee Devils Division One Women hosted third-placed Geelong Supercats in their first meeting for the 2016 season.
The Devils started promisingly, matching the Supercats for the first few minutes and led 9-7 with 5.28 remaining in the quarter. From there the Devils didn’t score another field goal for the quarter and the Supercats went on a 14-3 run, to take a comfortable lead into quarter time. Doni Lewis started well with five points and Jessica Slade had four. Bex Van Kuyk had six rebounds and Nicole Greene grabbed two.
Jackie Silcock and Doni Lewis struck in the first minute for the Devils, reducing the margin to five points but they were immediately answered by B McKay and T Feery. The scoring from both teams picked up over the next few minutes. The difference was that Slade scored all nine points for the Devils during this time but the Supercats had six different scorers and gradually increased their lead, outscoring the Devils 17-7 over the latter stages of the quarter. This gave them a 20-point lead at half time. Slade had 11 points and two rebounds for the quarter, while Jackie Silcock chipped in with four and Lewis had three.
Once again the Devils committed themselves well in the early part of the quarter and a Taylah Lea three-pointer with 5.53 remaining got them within 13 points. However, once again they ran out of steam and the Supercats were able to extend their lead. The Devils actually won the quarter but still faced a 19-point deficit at the final change. Slade led the way with six points, three rebounds and two steals for the quarter, Greene added four points and Lewis had three points and two assists. Van Kuyk also grabbed three rebounds.
The Devils had put up a good fight, but going into the game with eight players up against an opposition with a full complement of 12 on their list meant that it was always going to be a big ask. The Supercats piled on 22 points and the Devils only points for the quarter were two free throws from Van Kuyk with 15 seconds left in the game. The final margin blew out to 39, 52-91.
Division One Women is an 11-team competition and has a final six. The Devils have played 12 out of their 20 games and currently sit 10th, with 2 wins and 10 losses.
After the Queens Birthday break, the Devils (10th, 2-10) next matchup is Round 12 against the Camberwell Dragons (7th, 6-7), at Eagle Stadium on Sunday June 19th. Their previous meeting was in Round 1, which resulted in an 88-56 win to the Dragons.
