In Round 12, the Werribee Devils Division One Women (10th, 2-10) hosted the Camberwell Dragons (7th, 6-7). Last time they met was in Round 1 and the Dragons won it 88-56.
Both teams took a while to get going. Jackie Silcock hit a long three to kick things off for the Devils after four minutes of play and Jessica Slade scored the home side’s next five points to tie the game up with 4.21 on the clock. Neither side scored for the next two minutes before Bex Van Kuyk put one in and then Tegan Hindle, fresh from playing in the Youth League Women’s victory, hit a three-pointer to bring the house down and give the Devils the lead inside the last minute. The Dragons scored a three and a freethrow to take back the lead before Lauren Conroy hit a nice buzzer beater to tie the game at 15-15.
The Dragons struck first with an early three-pointer, and from there the first half of the quarter was literally goal-for-goal, with Van Kuyk, Slade and Doni Lewis all contributing. The Dragons finally strung some baskets together, scoring eight unanswered points to open up a double digit lead. The Devils only scored twice in the last five minutes through Lewis and Nicole Greene, and found themselves trailing 40-27 at the main break. Slade and Lewis had four points each, while Greene and Jackie Silcock each grabbed three rebounds.
The Devils came out on top in the third quarter, starting with an initial 8-2 burst in the opening minutes thanks to Slade, Van Kuyk and Jasmine Silcock. The margin was down to seven and the Devils looked to be growing in confidence. The teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter and the Devils got as close as four points late in the term, but were unable to put together the few scores in a row they needed to make further inroads on the scoreboard. Slade and Van Kuyk both had huge quarters, remarkably with identical stats of 10 points, two assists and three rebounds.
As has happened often this season, the hard work and effort this undermanned Devils unit put in took its toll, and they were unable to sustain it in the last. A Slade free throw was the Devils first score, four minutes into the quarter, and Lewis scored the first field goal at the halfway point. By this time, the Dragons had added 11 points of their own, and the lead was again out to double digits. Hindle added four points in the final minutes, joined by free throws from Van Kuyk and Greene. The Dragons poured in 15 points in the last five minutes, running away with a 21-point victory, 83-62.
In Round 13 the Devils (10th, 2-11) play away to the Chelsea Gulls (6th, 7-6) on Saturday night, and they'll be hoping to improve on the 63-103 result from their previous meeting in Round 7.
