In Round 11, the Werribee Devils Youth League Women paid a visit to Geelong to take on the Corio Bay Stingrays. Their previous contest was in Round 1, when the Devils were victorious 59-44.
The Stingrays hit the scoreboard first but the opening quarter belonged to the Devils. Tegan Hindle started the visitors off, then Natasha Currrao, Teaghan Doyle, Eliza Herne, Hayley Jones and Charlotte Lord got on the scoresheet as the Devils scored the next 15 points. The Stingrays finally answered with four points in quick time but Lord extended the lead to double digits again with a basket and a free throw late in the quarter. The Devils held a nine point lead at quarter time due to a three-pointer to the Stingrays Abby Loughhead in the final minute. Lord led the Devils with six points, three rebounds and two steals. Hindle added five points, while Taylah Lea had two blocks and three rebounds.
The Stingrays scored the first five points of the second quarter to get within four, but free throws to Currao and Lord gave the Devils some breathing space temporarily. The home side then scored seven points in 40 seconds but two baskets from Doyle ensured the Devils kept their lead for a little while longer. But the Stingrays kept coming and finally, with 3.58 left in the quarter, Tamara Knox put the home side ahead. The rest of the quarter was a closely fought contest, with both teams going goal-for-goal. There were four lead changes and neither team got more than four points ahead. A three-pointer from Knox in the final minute gave the Stingrays a three point halftime lead. There were 24 fouls committed in the quarter, 15 by the Devils and 9 by Corio Bay. Werribee converted 10-of-17 free throws while Corio Bay hit 13-of-20. Doyle scored six points for the Devils and Rachel Miller had five points and five rebounds.
The pattern continued early in the third quarter. Tahlia Tatlock flew the flag for the Stingrays while Lord and Herne struck back for the Devils. Four points from Doyle got the Devils lead back and they extended it with eight unanswered points through the middle stages of the quarter. A 7-2 Stingray run in the final two minutes brought the margin back to two points at the final break. Doyle and Lord both had six points and two rebounds for the Devils, while Herne (two rebounds) and Hindle (three rebounds) added four points each.
The lead changed six times in the first three minutes of the final term. Lord hit a 3-pointer and proceeded to dominate the next few minutes. She scored 11 consecutive points and Hindle added four during a 15-2 Devils run in the space of three minutes, and the visitors had a comfortable double digit lead with 3.46 remaining. However, the Stingrays weren’t done. They scored 13 points in the next 2.27 but never managed to take back the lead thanks to four points from Jones and then four free throws from Doyle in the final minute put the game beyond reach, giving the Devils a narrow 85-81 victory. Hindle ended up with eight points and five points for the quarter.
The Youth League Women division is an eight team competition with a final four. The Devils have played 12 of their 21 games so far this season and currently sit second on the ladder with 9 wins and 3 losses. Despite having lost twice to Altona, they remain 0.33% ahead of them.
After the Queens Birthday break, the Devils (2nd, 9-3) next matchup is Round 12 against the McKinnon Cougars (7th, 4-10), at Eagle Stadium on Sunday June 19th. The teams have met twice during the season, with Werribee winning both contests: 82-73 in Round 5 and 87-58 in Round 9.
