The Werribee Devils State Championship Men (9th, 5-10) finally returned to action after the Queens Birthday weekend was followed by a bye in Round 12.  They travelled to take on the Corio Bay Stingrays (2nd, 12-3). The two sides met back in Round 6 and the Stingrays won on that occasion 99-86.

Imports Fred Hunter and Jeremy Smith got the Devils off to a positive start, and the visitors led in the early stages. The Stingrays fought back thanks to Reardon, Hicks and Clayton and they briefly took the lead halfway through the quarter. However, former Stingray Dion Jewell hit a three-pointer and the Devils took the lead back and went into quarter time with a five point advantage. The Devils had several contributors. Jewell and Hunter both scored eight points, Smith had six and Jonathan Sonda scored four and had two blocks. Jordan Hughes gave out three assists and grabbed two rebounds.

Dondray Walker scored the first four points of the quarter for the Stingrays and the Devils didn’t get on the board for two minutes. Sonda and Hughes both scored, allowing the Devils to keep their narrow lead, but a 10-0 Stingrays run swung things back their way. Hughes, Hunter and Sonda fought back to tie the game up before Stingray Michael Rebula scored two points plus the bonus free throw. A Sonda three-pointer in the final seconds levelled the game up at 43-43 at half time. Sonda led the Devils with seven points for the quarter, followed by six points from Hughes. Hunter had four points, three assists and three rebounds.

The third term belonged to the Stingrays. They outscored the Devils 8-1 in the opening two minutes and the Devils were playing catch-up from that point. The contest was still close, and a Jewell three-pointer halfway through the quarter brought the Devils within three points. With three minutes remaining Smith got on a bit of a streak, scoring seven points in less than a minute. Six unanswered points to the Stingrays in the final minute gave them a 10-point buffer at the final break. Hunter put in five points, three rebounds and two assists, while Hughes had three points and three rebounds.

When play resumed, the Stingrays continued their momentum from the final minute of the third quarter, outscoring the Devils 13-4 in the first half of the quarter. Hunter, Hughes and Smith dragged the Devils back within 12 points with a couple of minutes to go. Hunter and Stingray Rob Harding were the only scorers in the last two minutes, as the Stingrays finished with a 13-point win. Hunter finished the quarter with nine points and three rebounds, joined by Smith with six points and two rebounds.

In Round 14 the Devils (9th, 5-11) will travel to face the Waverley Falcons (3rd, 12-3) at 2.30pm on Sunday. The last time they met was at Eagle Stadium in Round 2, and the Falcons won 80-68.
