In Round 12, the Werribee Devils Youth League Men (3rd, 11-4) hosted the Camberwell Dragons (7th, 7-7). Their previous meeting was in Round 2 and the Devils won it 91-85.

Jesse Harberger scored the Devils first four points and the opening minutes were tightly contested before the Devils put the jets on and unleashed a 10-0 run in two minutes to open up a handy lead. Mitch Alush and Josh Zamperoni joined Harberger on the scoreboard. However, the Dragons fought back and in the final three minutes of the quarter they also scored 10 unanswered points and took a one-point lead into quarter time. Harberger finished with eight points and two rebounds for the quarter, supported by Zamperoni with four. Alush had three assists and two rebounds, while Kodi Opetaia grabbed four rebounds.

The Dragons scored first in the second quarter before Alush and Opetaia replied for the Devils and took back the lead. The Dragons went on another streak with nine consecutive points before Harberger broke the Devils scoring drought at the halfway point of the quarter. The remainder of the quarter was fairly even, with Bubby Luxford chipping in four points and Mangar Manyang joining in. The difference was the Dragons were hitting threes, thus steadily extending their lead. When Mitch Pollard hit a three-pointer in the final seconds, the home side was facing a 16-point half time deficit.

Harberger (two) and Alush (five) combined for the first seven points of the third quarter and managed to get the margin down to single digits in the first two minutes. However, the Dragons had all the answers, pushing their lead back out to 18 with 3.30 remaining. Alush (seven points, two rebounds) and Manyang (nine points, four rebounds) did their best to keep the Devils in it, and TJ Remy’s quick hands netted him five steals for the quarter. The Devils won the quarter but still trailed by 14 at the last break.

Despite not scoring a field goal in the first half of the final term, the Devils somehow found themselves within 10 points, thanks to the free throw shooting of Mangar. The big man scored the Devils first seven points, all from the charity stripe. The only other contributor in the first eight minutes was Alush (three) as the margin again blew out in favour of the visitors. The Devils finished with a rush, scoring nine points in the last two minutes. The only problem was, every time they scored the Dragons went up the other end and did the same thing or went one better from beyond the arc. Josh Tang added four points for the Devils while Harberger grabbed five rebounds.

The final result was a 14-point win to the seventh-placed Dragons, who simply had the Devils measure on the night. In Round 13 the Devils (3rd, 11-5) play away to the Warrandyte Venom (5th, 9-6) on Sunday afternoon.
