The Werribee Devils Youth League Women suffered their first loss of the 2016 season in a nail-biter against the Camberwell Dragons.

Eliza Herne got the team off to a great start with a basket inside the first 20 seconds. The Devils then went scoreless for three minutes before a Taylah Lea score and a Natasha Currao three-pointer gave the Devils a narrow lead. The Devils were either leading or tied for the rest of the quarter until a last-second three-pointer from Dragon Rachel Bett gave the home side a 15-13 lead at quarter time.

Three points to Hayley Jones and a free throw to Herne gave the Devils the lead back within the first two minutes. However, the Dragons proceeded to go on an 8-0 run before Alex Moss and Lea got the Devils back within two points. The Dragons seemed to have all the answers and stretched their lead back out to six, but a late Moss basket plus two free throws to Currao in the last six seconds brought the half time margin back to two in favour of the Dragons, 27-25.

Mirroring the previous two quarters, the Devils scored first through Moss, plus free throws to Currao and Lea and briefly regained the lead. They then went scoreless for four minutes as the Dragons scored six unanswered points. Finally Teaghan Doyle broke the drought and Lea quickly followed, and it was clear this contest was going to go down to the wire. Doyle and Currao continued applying scoreboard pressure late in the quarter but the Devils saw their hard-earned three point advantage disappear when Tiarnie Ellingworth scored on the three-quarter time buzzer.

The Devils held a 42-41 advantage going into the last quarter; the question was whether they could finish off strong. It took the Devils seven shots and four minutes before they got on the board thanks to Moss, by which time the Dragons had a six point lead. It was a long time between scores for the Devils. Lea scored with just under five minutes to go, then it was another two minutes before Moss scored again for the visitors. Fortunately for the Devils, the Dragons weren’t shooting any better, and despite only making three field goals in eight minutes, the Devils were still within two points. Doyle scored what was to be the Devils last basket with 1.26 remaining and the Dragons had most of the play but couldn’t put the Devils away.

With her team leading by one, Amber Carr had the chance to make it very difficult for the Devils but could only make one of two free throws. Down by two with five seconds to go, the Devils had the last possession. Moss’s three point attempt was unsuccessful but Doyle grabbed the offensive rebound. The Dragons managed to get a steal before the Devils could put up another shot, and the Devils simply ran out of time, leaving the Dragons with a 52-50 win.

A day after suffering their first loss for the season at the hands of Camberwell, the Werribee Devils Youth League Women have handed the Warrandyte Venom their first loss for the season. The Devils got up by two points on the final play thanks to a massive offensive rebound from Natasha Currao and then a successful last second shot by Tegan Hindle, sending the Eagle Stadium crowd into wild celebrations.

Despite leading for just over three minutes the whole game, the Devils lifted in the final quarter to storm home and pinch the 58-56 win, which leaves Warrandyte on top of the ladder, ahead of the Devils by just two percent.

The Devils scored the first two baskets of the game through Currao and Taylah Lea and they led for the first three minutes of the game before the Venom started to take control. The visitors were controlling the boards 16-8 thanks to Natalie McDonald (6) and Simone Caruana (5), while Ellie Locke scored eight points. Hayley Jones led the Devils with four points for the quarter. The Venom led by six, before a late basket from Jones made the score 10-14 at quarter time.

The second quarter was hardly a spectacle, with both teams combining for 7-of-32 from the field. Teaghan Doyle got the Devils off to a good start with the opening score and they drew level on a couple of occasions, but spent most of the quarter trailing by one or two baskets. Charlotte Lord finally put them in front with 0.43 left in the half but the lead was short-lived as she was immediately answered by Venom’s Izzy Feller, giving the visitors a 22-21 half time lead. Lord led the Devils with four points for the quarter and Eliza Herne had three points.

The third quarter saw the Venom take complete control of the game, outscoring the Devils 26-14 and outrebounding them 17-7. The Devils stayed in touch early, and a Lord three-pointer got them within 27-31 with 5.43 remaining. From there the Venom went on a 10-1 run, opening up a double-digit lead. The Devils scored 2-of-16 from the field, with nine made free throws adding some respectability to their scoreline. Lord scored six for the quarter, while Jones and Herne both added three.

Facing a 13-point deficit, something special was required and the girls delivered. In stark contrast to the previous night’s eight-point final quarter effort, the Devils went on a 16-4 hot streak to draw within one point with four minutes to play. The shooting percentage lifted and the Devils won the rebounds for the first time all game. Currao (eight points, three rebounds), Doyle (seven points, two rebounds) and Alex Moss (four points, five rebounds) all had huge quarters and stood up when they were needed. The Venom got their lead back out to five points inside the last two minutes but foul trouble proved costly, with the Devils scoring five of their last seven points from free throws.

With 20 seconds left, scores were tied at 56-56 and the Devils had possession. All they had to do was look after the ball and get a good shot off to win the game. The Venom had one final chance when Moss missed from the corner but Currao pulled in a huge offensive rebound and Tegan Hindle found herself with the ball. In desperation she threw up an awkward looking ‘prayer’ from mid-range but whatever it looked like, the important thing was that it went off the backboard and through the ring, giving the Devils an unlikely but impressive two point victory.

In Round 5 the Devils (2nd, 4-1) will travel to Bentleigh to face the McKinnon Cougars (4th, 2-2)
