The Werribee Devils Division One Women’s team has fallen to their third straight loss, with a 67-101 defeat at the hands of the Keilor Thunder.
The Thunder got on top early but the Devils managed to stay in touch thanks to Doni Lewis, who had a big nine-point first term. Halfway through the quarter, Keilor went on a 10-0 run, setting up a double digit lead. They had seven individual scorers and went into quarter time with a 24-15 lead. Former Devil Katrina Vogelezang was having an impact, with four rebounds and two steals.
The trend continued in the second term. Keilor started better and jumped to a 13 point lead, but free throws to the two Conroys and a basket to the always dangerous Bex Van Kuyk brought the difference back to single digits. However, the Devils were unable to maintain any sort of momentum, and a 9-0 Keilor streak saw the margin blow out to 20 inside the last two minutes of the half. Nicole Greene had a big quarter, with seven rebounds and two steals to go with a three-pointer. Jenna Conroy and Jessica Slade also contributed three points each, while Thunder’s Amy Mitchener had 12 points for the quarter. Keilor made the Devils pay for their mistakes, scoring eight points from the home side’s nine turnovers.
Things didn’t improve for the Devils in the second half. Separate runs of nine and eleven unanswered points to the Thunder saw the margin out beyond 30. The Devils had no answer for the Thunder’s Jessica Scannell who scored 16 points for the quarter, eclipsing the Devils 14-point total all by herself. Jackie Silcock (six) and Bex Van Kuyk (seven) were doing their bit in the rebounding department and Van Kuyk added 10 points, but they were simply outplayed and went to the final break 29 points behind.
There were some positive signs for the Devils in the last quarter. Fouls (2) and turnovers (2) were way down, Elise Swan put in a big last quarter with eight points and seven rebounds and the Devils had their best quarter for the game offensively, with 24 points. However, Keilor had all the answers, pouring in 29 points and running away with a 101-67 victory.
The Devils now need to regroup and face up to a double header in Round 4. On Saturday they travel to Boardman Stadium to play the Sunbury Jets (2nd, 3-0) and return home on Sunday to host the Latrobe City Energy (8th, 1-2)
