The Werribee Devils Youth League Women’s team have notched their third straight win to begin the 2016 season, with a 77-71 victory over the Coburg Giants. In a topsy-turvy contest the girls didn’t have it all their own way, forced into overtime after leading by 15, but came good when it mattered.
The pleasing thing for the Devils was that even though no-one had a solid four quarter game, several different players stood up and played big quarters when their team needed them and the others were struggling.
Charlotte Vincent-Lord got the Devils off to a great start with a 10-point, five rebound opening quarter. Eliza Herne added four points and Alex Moss, who had a huge double-double (17 points, 17 rebounds), grabbed three boards. Late in the quarter the Devils got out to a ten point lead before being pegged back slightly. Late baskets to Herne and Vincent-Lord gave the Devils a 21-12 lead at the first break.
The second quarter started slowly, with neither team scoring in the first 90 seconds. The Giants looked the better team and scored twice, creeping within five points. Hayley Jones kicked things off for the Devils, but the quarter belonged to the Giants. Siobhan MacAodha heated up, scoring four three-pointers in five minutes, the Giants scored 21 points for the quarter and when the carnage was over the home team found themselves with a six-point lead with less than a minute remaining in the half. A long-range score from Vincent-Lord just before the buzzer brought the half-time margin back to three, 33-30 in favour of the Giants. The Devils shot 4-of-24 for the quarter, and the ‘trey’ meant Vincent-Lord was the Devils highest scorer in the term, with Jones, Herne and Natasha Currao all scoring once.
Things once again took a while to get going after the long break. Rachel Miller and Moss scored for the Devils, and two Taylah Lea free throws with 6.35 remaining gave the Devils the lead back. The contest remained close, but then Teaghan Doyle took the game by the scruff of the neck, scoring nine points in five minutes and giving the Devils a handy 51-42 lead at the final break. The Devils were outrebounded and outplayed in the second term but bounced back, with Doyle (four), Moss (four) and Miller (three) all crashing the boards and giving the Devils the edge.
The Devils started the quarter better and an 8-2 run, including five points to Moss, gave the Devils a 15-point lead with 7.40 to play. However, the Giants weren’t done. They scored nine consecutive points over the next two minutes to bring the deficit back to single digits. Miller, Moss and Tegan Hindle all scored, keeping the Giants at bay, and with 1.56 to play the Devils held a 67-60 lead.
There was to be another twist in the tail of this game and it came in the form of Devils foul trouble. Two Giants baskets and then two made free throws from Stephanie Belbasis with 40 seconds remaining whittled the Devils lead to one point. Then Mac Aodha, so destructive from long range in the second quarter, was fouled and had the chance to put the Giants in front but only made one of two, tying the game at 67-67. Moss and Vincent-Lord both missed shots in the final ten seconds and when the Giants got possession of the ball with seven seconds to play they called a time-out, which meant the ball was advanced to their front court.
From the in-bound, Elo Macbegor (3-of-12 free throws) was fouled, giving her two shots and the chance to win the game for the Giants. She missed both and Vincent-Lord secured the rebound, sending the game into overtime. Moss had a huge final quarter with nine points and four rebounds, while Miller also grabbed three rebounds.
Perhaps stung by the fact they gave up a 15-point lead and came within a whisker of losing the game, the Devils wasted no time in getting back the ascendancy, scoring three times in the space of 50 seconds through Vincent-Lord, Jones and Hindle. The next two minutes went by scoreless for both teams, and this time it was the Giants turn to be in foul trouble, giving the Devils plenty of opportunities to extend their lead from the charity stripe.
The girls left the Coburg Basketball Stadium with a 77-71 win. Round 4 brings their first double header for the season: on Saturday they’re road-trippin’ to the east to face the Camberwell Dragons (3rd, 2-1), then they’re back at home on Sunday against the Warrandyte Venom (2nd, 4-0).
