The Eagle Stadium crowd was treated to another entertaining exhibition from the Werribee Devils Youth League Men’s team on Saturday night, as they trounced the Ballarat Miners 108-62.

The Miners barely had time to settle into the game before they found themselves down 19-5 after five minutes, and went into the first break trailing 34-13. The Devils defence was relentless, not giving the boys from Ballarat any easy possessions. This resulted in 11 Miner turnovers and the Devils made them pay, scoring 17 points as a result of turnovers. Cam Hutton and Josh Tang snatched a couple of steals each. During last week’s win over Camberwell, the box score said the Devils only had four assists for the match. They surpassed this number in the first quarter, sharing the ball around and dishing out nine assists, led by Bubby Luxford with three and TJ Remy with two. Mitch Alush led all scorers with nine points for the quarter, supported by Remy with seven and Tang with five.

The Devils continued their domination in the second quarter, a 9-0 run in the middle of the quarter pushing the lead to 30 points. Cam Hutton fired in 11 points, while Alush had five points and two steals. Josh Zamperoni was strong on the defensive end with a couple of blocks. The 23-13 term gave the Devils a commanding 57-26 lead at the main break.

Ballarat fought back in the third term, thanks to 17 points and 7 rebounds from James Reeves. While the visitors were starting a long way behind, this didn’t stop them playing for a bit of pride. An 8-0 run late in the quarter brought the margin close to 20, and they out-rebounded the Devils 14-7. Tang led the Devils with six points, Luxford scored five and Zac Latham made the most of some court time, scoring his first points for the season.

Going into the last quarter, the pleasing thing for coach Darren Hindle was that the Devils didn’t take the foot off the pedal despite an 82-55 lead. Hampered by 13 turnovers and 2-of-15 from the field, the Miners only managed seven points in the final term. In contrast, the Devils made them pay, scoring 16 points from the Miners mistakes and nailing six from beyond the arc. The Devils scored 14 of the last 15 points, led by Hutton with 12 and Travis Dale with five. The Devils rebounding also lifted, led by Latham (four) and Tang (three).

The Devils face a double-header in Round 4: on Saturday they’re at home against the Keysborough Cougars (12th, 0-6), then on Sunday they travel to Coburg to take on the Giants (9th, 1-2).
