After being on the end of a thumping at Sunbury on Saturday night, the Werribee Devils Division One Women’s team returned home on Sunday to face the Latrobe City Energy, still searching for their first win for season 2016.

Tanarly Hood scored first for the visitors, then the Devils went on a 13-0 run to set up a nice lead with four minutes remaining. Latrobe recovered and started warming up but the Devils showed composure and kept an eight point lead at the first break. Bex Van Kuyk started well with six points and seven rebounds, while Jessica Slade and Nicole Greene added four each.

The Devils started the second term very well, scoring the first eight points through Van Kuyk and Greene and setting up a 16 point lead. They maintained a healthy double digit lead and Slade scored the last three points of the quarter to take the margin out to 21 at the main break. Van Kuyk scored seven for the quarter and was joined by Doni Lewis with five and Lauren Conroy with four.

Whatever the Latrobe coach said at half time obviously made an impact, since the Energy came out and scored the first ten points of the quarter in under three minutes. The Devils appeared to lose all confidence in bringing the ball down the court, and the Energy pressure resulted in 11 Devil turnovers for the quarter. Latrobe made them pay, with 17 points from turnovers. Latrobe’s Coco Henry was unstoppable, scoring 17 points for the quarter and the Energy kept coming until they finally hit the lead with 1.19 to play. The ball was now in the Devils court: could they fight back, or would they collapse under the pressure? Van Kuyk and Slade got the Devils back on level pegging at the last break, 54-54.

The stage was set for a huge final quarter as the Devils had a genuine opportunity to snatch a confidence-building first win for the season. Jackie Silcock and Greene both entered the quarter on four fouls. Both would end up getting fouled off, but before she did, Silcock lit the Energy up with 10 points, including three three-pointers. The Devils skipped to a five point lead early on through Van Kuyk and Jenna Conroy but the Energy fought back to regain the lead. Silcock hit the first of her long bombs to put the Devils back in front, and by the time she had landed two more, the Devils had a handy lead. Latrobe weren’t done, though, getting within 70-68 with a minute to play. Foul trouble ended up costing them dearly, with the Devils showing great composure, drawing fouls and converting 11 of 16 free throws in the final minute, to run away with a well-deserved 82-71 victory. Van Kuyk finished the quarter with eight points and eight rebounds, supported by Slade with five points and Lewis had four assists and two steals.

In Round 5, Werribee (19th, 1-4) hosts Mildura (2nd, 3-1) at home on Saturday night.
