The Werribee Devils Youth League Women remain the club’s only undefeated team after two rounds, disposing of the Craigieburn Eagles in impressive fashion with an 87-52 victory at Eagle Stadium on Sunday.
The tone was set early when Alex Moss, who led the Devils with 10 points and four rebounds in a huge first quarter, nailed a three-pointer in the first 15 seconds. Teaghan Doyle added seven points for the Devils, who led by as much as 20 before some late free throws allowed the Eagles to reach double figures and they went into the first break with the home side holding a comfortable 26-11 lead.
The second quarter was a much more even contest, as the Eagles began to settle into the game. The Devils managed to get the lead out to 21 but were pegged back with a 7-0 Eagle run late in the quarter. Four points to Tegan Hindle in the final 90 seconds ensured the Devils won the quarter and went into half time with a 45-27 cushion. There were no clear standouts for the Devils, with Hindle joined by Moss and Eliza Herne on four points each for the quarter. 12 turnovers hurt the Eagles, with Hindle and Taylah Lea taking advantage, pinching a couple of steals each.
The early part of the third term was an arm wrestle with the two teams trading blows and with 5.39 remaining the score was 51-36. The Devils then blew the game apart completely with a stunning 18-0 run, only stopped by an Eagles three-pointer with 36 seconds left in the quarter. Things were getting noticeably snippy and Eagle frustrations boiled over, resulting in some scuffles and a tech foul being dished out. Chief destroyers were Hindle (six), Moss (four), Doyle (four) and Charlotte Vincent-Lord (four). The Devils shot 10-of-16 from the field (compared to 4-of-22 from the Eagles) and scored 14 of their 27 points under the basket.
There was no respite for the Eagles as the Devils dominated the first half of the quarter with a 13-0 run, taking the lead out to 46. The Eagles didn’t score until 4.30 remaining but then scored the last ten points of the game, resulting in a satisfying 87-52 victory. Vincent-Lord finished strongly for the Devils with eight points for the quarter, while Steph Pyke made the most of her court time with some good defensive pressure and five points, including a nice long three-pointer.
Round 3 sees the girls away from home for the first time this season, facing Coburg (5th, 1-1) on Saturday night.
