The She-Devils Youth League Women did very well for such a young team in the Big V competition in 2015. Coached by Paul Jones, following their progress
was like riding a rollercoaster and due to a lack of consistency they
ultimately fell at the final hurdle, losing to Corio Bay and just missing out
on finals action, finishing 5th with 10 wins and 11 losses.
Under new coach Elisha Hogan, the girls have managed to retain the core of their 2015 roster, giving them a foundation to build on in 2016. Triple Towers Rachel Miller, Charlotte Vincent-Lord and Teaghan Doyle have returned, as have Hayley Jones, Jenna Thomas and Tegan Hindle. The ‘veteran’ of the team is 21 year old Alex Moss who averaged 8 points and 5 rebounds in 16 games for the Division One Women in 2015. She will be co-captaining the team with Taylah Lea. New faces include Steph Pyke, Eliza Herne, Lauren Tipper and Natasha Currao.
The girls kicked off their preseason with a contest against the She-Devils Division 1 Women, whose size and experience proved too much on the day. This was followed by a 1-point win over Altona Division 2 Women, a draw with Diamond Valley Youth League Championship Women and a 15 point loss to Hume City Youth League Championship women, during which the girls were close the whole game but were overrun in the last 5 minutes.
The team has already received an early confidence boost, taking out their division of the Big V Pre-season tournament by defeating Warrandyte 39-33.
Coach Elisha Hogan is optimistic about the season ahead and likes what she sees from the new recruits:
“We have been lucky to keep the majority of last year's team together which is important. Eliza Herne and Natasha Currao have joined the team from Altona and have impressed me from the start. Their work ethic and willingness to learn is great, they have transitioned into the team nicely and I know the other girls are excited to have them playing with us this year. Steph Pyke and Lauren Tipper are our development players and have proven that they can hold their own during our games in the pre-season. Steph is a quick little guard who doesn't back off defensively and Lauren just works, works, works and is so eager to learn and become a better player.”
The Big V Youth League One Women’s division will again consist of eight teams, with 2015 champs Hume City Broncos replaced by Camberwell Dragons. Supporters will fondly recall that the Devils were the only team to defeat Hume City during the season, with a 70-60 win in Round 15. The She Devils open their 2016 season at home on Sunday against the Corio Bay Stingrays.
