Werribee Devils Youth League One Men - 2016 Season Preview

The Werribee Devils Youth League One Men laid a solid foundation in 2015 under coach Trevor Burnette, which they will be looking to build on with their skilful, high-energy and exciting brand of basketball which was always fun to watch. Unfortunately they were unable to maintain any consistency during the season and missed the finals by percentage, finishing 7th with 11 wins and 11 losses.

In 2016, long-time Devils coach Darren Hindle is back in the driver’s seat and he will be assisted by Peter Daley. They are fortunate to have retained the core of their roster from 2015, allowing for some growth and consistency. This team also has the benefit of possibly one of the most vocal and passionate supporter groups in the League, meaning that visiting teams have to contend with more than just the five players on the court when they venture to ‘The Furnace.’

When watching the Devils in action last year, it was clear they were a 'team.' There were several key contributors including Cam Hutton (9.7 pts, 4 rebs per game), Josh Zamperoni (9 pts, 6 rebs), TJ Remy (9.1 pts, 4 rebs) and the team MVP Mark 'Bubby' Luxford (9.5 pts, 7 rebs, 4 assists). From three-point range Cam (29), Josh (43) and TJ (37) also shot above 30%.

The Big V Youth League One Men division is once again a 12-team competition, with 2015 champions Blackburn being replaced by Warrandyte Venom. The Devils open their season at home on Saturday night against the Geelong Supercats.

Speaking of which, a Facebook Event was created for the season opener (as is the style these days), and the young fella who wrote the description (it wasn’t me) should be a sports promoter or journo. Quite a way with words. Here is all you need to know about the Werribee Devils Youth League Men 2016 season:

“ITS BACK!! The 2016 Big V season is finally upon us and after months of preparation the Youth League Men are set to tackle their season opener. Lined up against one of our west side rivals in the Geelong Supercats the round one clash is sure not to disappoint. Boasting a new coaching staff lead by Darren ‘Dazza’ Hindle and Peter Daly the boys are playing under a revamped structure and philosophy that is sure to excite. Supporting our lead men are Assistant Coach Adam Garth, Team Manager John Remy and arguably the greatest addition to the team, team mascot, Tyra ‘T-Time’ Hindle. This season saw the majority of the core with ice cold Mark Bubby’ Luxford, shooters TJ Remy and Josh Zamperoni, swing men Cameron Hutton and
Dylan Harberger, pumpfake specialist Travis Dale and the veteran microwave Liam Paul all returning to the court for season 2016. The returning core has facilitated a great foundation for new pieces to be added, and boy were they added! Versatile forward Jesse Harberger has returned after playing State Champ Men and athletic guard Mitch Alush is back from injury. Alongside the returnees we have a plethora of rookie talent in shooter Josh Tang, work horses Zac Latham and Kodi Opetaia as well as 6’8 big man Mangar Dut. A team built on pace, shooting and unity there isn’t a team in the competition the boys don’t have the ability to dismantle when firing on all cylinders. The stage is set so get down to Eagle Stadium Saturday the 19th of March at 6:30pm to support the Devils as they begin the 2016 grind for a title. See you there!”
