The stage was set for a great day. Sunday March 20^th was “Game Day,” the 2016 season opener for the Werribee She-Devils Division One Women against the Camberwell Dragons. Finally the long but positive pre-season was at an end. New season, new coach, almost entirely new playing roster and milestone games for Jasmine (50 Big V games) and Jackie Silcock (100 Big V games).

Then the tip-off happened and it was all downhill from there. The Dragons defence caused 15 Devil turnovers in the first quarter and 39 for the match. The home side opened up a 24-12 lead at the first break thanks to 10 of 22 shooting, while the Devils could only manage eight shots for the quarter.

The Devils managed to stay within range in the second quarter thanks to some dominant rebounding as well as the Dragons shooting form going missing (6-24 field, 3-10 freethrows). However, things didn’t get any better in the third quarter as the Devils rebounding advantage disappeared and the Dragons poured in 30 points including four from beyond the arc from Mikaela Dickson (six of eight for the game).

The Devils seemed to warm up as the game progressed, committing fewer turnovers and taking more shots. They finished ahead in rebounds and blocks but were ultimately outplayed on the scoreboard, where it counted.

Round 2 sees the Devils play their first home game for the season, against the Westernport Steelers (7^th) on Saturday April 2^nd as part of a triple-header at Eagle Stadium. The Steelers lost their opening game 47-46 against the Craigieburn Eagles.
