The Werribee Devils State Championship Men’s team have found themselves ‘top of the tree’ after a dominant opening contest against the Hawthorn Magic at a packed Eagle Stadium on Saturday night.

Armed with a new coach and a couple of formidable new recruits, the win was set up by a 22-6 second quarter after the opening term was fairly even. Jordan Hughes started the game well with eight points and was joined by big man Evan Matthews with seven and Jeremy Smith added five.

After the Youth League Men won comfortably over the Geelong Supercats earlier in the night, the home crowd was hungry for more and the Devils didn’t disappoint, breaking the game wide open in the second quarter. It was an even team performance with six individual scorers. They went on separate runs of 10-1 and 12-0 during the term and all of a sudden the lead was out beyond 20 points. Hawthorn couldn’t sink a basket, shooting an abysmal 2/17 from the field. Matthews once again had seven points and added six rebounds, while Jonathan Sonda scored four.

The third quarter was another even contest, with the Devils able to maintain their 20 point cushion. Jeremy Smith, causing the Magic problems with his aggressive drives and floaty over-the-top jump shots, stepped up with nine points and Hughes contributed five. Crowd favourite Dion Jewell nearly brought the house down when he nailed a long three-pointer with 39 secs to go in the quarter.

The final quarter was a mere formality and the pleasing thing for new coach Mike Czepil was there was no sign of anyone taking their foot off the pedal. The Devils increased their lead and ended up with a 30 point victory. Jeremy Smith had a huge final term with 11 points and four rebounds, Jewell hit another one from beyond the arc while another crowd favourite Corey Wright made the most of his limited opportunities, scoring four points for the term.

Coach Mike Czepil had this to say after the game: "Really happy with the first up effort from the guys.  I could see what we have been working on at practice carry over to the game and that is pleasing.  All ten guys did their job when they were called upon and that's what is expected of them.  We just have to keep getting better.  We have a couple weeks of preparation now for Waverley so we need a great focus and effort as we continue to build this thing up."

In a twist, both the Devils Round 2 opponents faced each other in Round 1. The Devils are at home against the Waverley Falcons (5th) on Saturday April 2nd and then they venture to The Rings to face the Ringwood Hawks (8th) on Sunday afternoon.
