Werribee Devils Youth League One Men - 2015 Season Review

There was a lot to like about the Werribee Devils Youth League One men's team in 2015. The coaches had put together an impressive list of talented young players and they always had plenty of contributors without having to rely on the same two or three guys, as you will see when you read through the season review below.

Unfortunately the Devils were unable to build any sort of consistency or momentum throughout the season. They only had one winning streak of more than two in a row and spent over half the season sitting in 7th place, just outside the top six. Ultimately that is where they finished, albeit on percentage.

Round 1, Sunday March 15
Werribee 71 lost to Altona 78 (Altona Sports Centre)
1st 18-17 (W1)
2nd 23-16 (W7)
3rd 18-17 (W1)
4th 12-28 L16)
The Devils opened their season on a Sunday afternoon against local rivals Altona. They won the first three quarters and built a nice little lead but it all came undone when the Gators unleashed a big final term and kept the Devils to 12 points to run away with a seven point win.
* TJ Remy (14 points, 3 assists)
* Jacob Epperson (14 points, 13 rebounds, 5 blocks)
* Dylan Harberger (11 points)

Round 2, Saturday March 21
Werribee (9th) 55 lost to Sunbury (5th) 70 (Boardman Stadium)
1st 8-16 (L8)
2nd 17-13 (W4)
3rd 12-18 (L6)
4th 18-23 (L5)
The Devils headed out to Sunbury to take on the Jets. For a team with several good shooters, unfortunately not one of them was on target on this night and they would have been disappointed with quarter totals of 8 and 12. The margin was only four points at the half, but the Jets won both the third and fourth quarters to take a 15 point win.
* Travis Dale (9 points, 1 rebound)
* Cameron Hutton (8 points, 1 assist)
* Jacob Epperson (7 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks)

Sunday March 22
Werribee (9th) 79 defeated Geelong (7th) 56 (The Geelong Arena)
1st 20-7 (W13)
2nd 26-20 (W6)
3rd 18-11 (W7)
4th 15-18 (L3)
The Devils shooting form returned to them in a hurry as they played their third straight away game, this time against Geelong. Less than a day after (mis)firing for 55 against Sunbury, the Devils shot 46 points in a big first half to open up a 19 point lead. The defence was on song as well, keeping the Supercats to 7 and 11 points in the first and third quarters.
* Cameron Hutton (18 points, 2 assists)
* Mark Luxford (16 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists)
* Richard Draghiciu (10 points, 1 rebound)
* Travis Dale (10 points, 4 assists)

Round 3, Saturday March 28
Werribee (7th) 72 defeated Bendigo (12th) 64 (WSFC)
1st 14-16 (L2)
2nd 14-14 (D)
3rd 27-19 (W8)
4th 17-15 (W2)
The Devils played their first home game for the season against Bendigo, who at this stage were on the bottom of the ladder. The Braves gave the Devils a fright in the first half, taking a two point lead into the main break. After being restricted to 28 points in the first half the Devils broke free with a 27-point third quarter, taking a lead that they would not give up and resulting in their second win in a row.
* Jacob Epperson (20 points, 11 rebounds)
* Cameron Hutton (14 points, 7 rebounds)
* TJ Remy (10 points, 5 rebounds)

Sunday March 29
Werribee (7th) 86 defeated Keysborough (9th) 68 (Springers Leisure Centre)
1st 14-13 (W1)
2nd 20-8 (W12)
3rd 34-25 (W9)
4th 18-22 (L4)
The Devils were going for three on the trot when they visited Keysborough on Sunday afternoon. The game got off to a competitive start, but it was the middle stages where the Devils really stuck the pitchfork in. They opened up a nice lead in the second quarter by restricting the Cougars to eight points, then exploded in the third quarter with 34 points, their highest quarter total for the season. Both defences went out the window as the Cougars also added 25 points, meaning that more points were scored in the third quarter than in the entire first half. Keysborough narrowly won the last quarter but it mattered little as the Devils finished with an 18-point win.
* Josh Zamperoni (15 points, 4 rebounds, 3 blocks)
* Sharieff Nepe (14 points, 2 rebounds)
* Jacob Epperson (13 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals, 5 blocks)

Round 4, Sunday April 12
Werribee (6th) 54 lost to Blackburn (3rd) 66 (WSFC)
1st 14-22 (L8)
2nd 6-18 (L12)
3rd 18-12 (W6)
4th 16-14 (W2)
With three wins in a row, Werribee moved up into the top six and came up against third-placed Blackburn at home. The Vikings threw their weight around early and went into half time with a twenty point lead, due mainly to holding the Devils to a season-low six points in the second quarter. They won the second half but were unable to peg back the deficit.
* Cameron Hutton (16 points, 2 rebounds)

* Jesse Harberger (8 points, 8 rebounds)
* Jacob Epperson (8 points, 12 rebounds)

Round 5, Sunday April 19
Werribee (6th) 73 lost to Hume City (9th) 76 (Broadmeadows Basketball Stadium)
1st 15-19 (L4)
2nd 23-20 (W3)
3rd 19-23 (L4)
4th 16-14 (W2)
When a team misses out on finals on percentage like the Devils did, it’s easy to look back on the season and identify games or moments that, if things had happened slightly differently, would have resulted in a more positive outcome. I’m guessing this was one of those moments for the Devils. The match against the 9th-placed Broncos was close all day, both teams won two quarters each but the Broncos ended up in front at the end.
* Josh Toniato (15 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists)
* Josh Zamperoni (12 points, 3 rebounds)
* Mark Luxford (10 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals)

Round 6, Sunday April 26
Werribee (7th) 67 defeated Coburg (4th) 61 (WSFC)
1st 17-16 (W1)
2nd 15-9 (W6)
3rd 17-18 (L1)
4th 18-18 (D)
One week after their disappointing loss against the Broncos, the Devils made up for it with a hard-fought win against Coburg who were sitting fourth. The game was even all the way through, with the difference proving to be the second quarter, when the Devils held the Giants to nine points.
* Josh Toniato (15 points, 6 rebounds)
* Josh Zamperoni (13 points, 2 rebounds)
* Cameron Hutton (11 points, 3 rebounds)

Round 7, Sunday May 3
Werribee (8th) 56 lost to Whittlesea (3rd) 78 (WSFC)
1st 12-18 (L6)
2nd 20-26 (L6)
3rd 11-22 (L11)
4th 13-12 (W1)
In the space of two weeks, the Devils had slipped from 6th to 8th and faced the challenge of the Pacers at home. Their shooting was not on target on this day, and totals of 11, 12 and 13 were always going to make a win unlikely.
* Cameron Hutton (17 points, 3 rebounds)
* Jesse Harberger (13 points, 5 rebounds)
* Mark Luxford (8 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists)

Round 8, Saturday May 9
Werribee (7th) 54 lost to Blackburn (3rd) 76 (Fairhills High School)
1st 17-20 (L3)
2nd 21-15 (W6)
3rd 10-15 (L5)
4th 6-26 (L20)
The Devils faced the Blackburn Vikings for the second time this season. They were only trailing by two points at the last break but were smashed 26-6 in the last quarter in a disappointing finish.
* TJ Remy (17 points, 5 rebounds)
* Mark Luxford (10 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists)
* Cameron Hutton (7 points, 5 rebounds)

Sunday May 10
Werribee (7th) 63 defeated Sunbury (1st) 59 (WSFC)
1st 15-15 (D)
2nd 11-11 (D)
3rd 15-13 (W2)
4th 22-20 (W2)
The Devils backed up their fade-out against Blackburn with a contest against top-placed Sunbury. The first half was a defensive scrap and nothing could separate the teams at half time. The Devils played slightly better in the second half, edging out the Jets by four points in a huge upset and avenging their 15-point defeat from earlier in the season.
* Josh Zamperoni (15 points, 5 rebounds)
* Richard Draghiciu (11 points, 4 rebounds)
* Mark Luxford (8 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals)

Round 9, Saturday May 16
Werribee (7th) 61 lost to Camberwell (11th) 93 (Balwyn High School)
1st 16-23 (L7)
2nd 12-21 (L9)
3rd 16-28 (L12)
4th 17-21 (L4)
The Devils continued their inconsistent season, losing to 11th placed Camberwell less than a week after toppling ladder-leaders Sunbury. The Dragons scored at least 20 points in each quarter as the Devils defence leaked a season-high 93 points and up the other end they couldn’t manage more than 17 in a quarter.
* TJ Remy (19 points, 4 rebounds)
* Dylan Harberger (12 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals)
* Cameron Hutton (9 points, 5 rebounds)

Sunday May 17
Werribee (7th) 88 defeated Bendigo (5th) 81 (Bendigo Stadium)
1st 20-18 (W2)
2nd 18-30 (L12)
3rd 26-19 (W7)
4th 24-14 (W10)
The Devils went on a road trip to Bendigo and continued their streak of winning the second games of double headers (four in a row this season) when they defeated the Braves in an important come-from-behind victory. The Devils trailed by 10 at half time but, unlike many occasions this season, had a strong second half and outscored the Braves 50-33, securing a seven point win.
* Mark Luxford (21 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists)
* Richard Draghiciu (18 points, 3 rebounds)
* Cameron Hutton (11 points, 3 rebounds)
* Josh Zamperoni (10 points, 6 rebounds)

Round 10, Sunday May 24
Werribee (8th) 68 lost to Coburg (4th) 72 (Coburg Basketball Stadium)
1st 22-15 (W7)
2nd 10-16 (L6)
3rd 17-14 (W3)
4th 19-27 (L8)
This was another one of those close contests that could have gone either way. Both teams won two quarters but the Giants finished slightly stronger, getting up by four points. A 10-point second quarter from the Devils proved costly.
* Richard Draghiciu (13 points, 4 rebounds)
* Josh Zamperoni (11 points, 6 rebounds)
* Mark Luxford (10 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals)

Round 11, Sunday May 31
Werribee (8th) 75 defeated Hume City (7th) 64 (WSFC)
1st 17-18 (L1)
2nd 13-15 (L2)
3rd 21-18 (W3)
4th 24-13 (W11)
Last time the Devils and Broncos met, Hume City escaped with a three-point win and the Devils were determined to not let this happen again. There wasn’t much in it at half time and scores were level at the last break, but the Devils finished stronger with a 24-13 final quarter to claim an important victory.
* Travis Dale (23 points, 7 rebounds)
* Josh Zamperoni (19 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals)
* Mark Luxford (11 points, 14 rebounds, 4 assists)
* Richard Draghiciu (6 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals)

Round 12, Saturday June 13
Werribee (7th) 82 defeated Ballarat (11th) 46 (MARS Minerdome)
1st 13-14 (L1)
2nd 26-9 (W17)
3rd 18-9 (W9)
4th 25-14 (W11)
The Devils had a nice percentage booster when they travelled to the Minerdome to face Ballarat. The ‘Rats put up a good fight in the first quarter but the Devils absolutely dominated the rest of the game. In their best defensive effort for the season, they held their opposition to 18 points in the middle two quarters and 46 for the game.
* Josh Zamperoni (20 points, 8 rebounds)
* TJ Remy (15 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals)
* Josh Toniato (11 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists)
* Dylan Harberger (10 points, 8 rebounds, 5 steals)

Sunday June 14
Werribee (7th) 61 lost to Altona (4th) 93 (WSFC)
1st 10-20 (L10)
2nd 7-20 (L13)
3rd 22-26 (L4)
4th 22-27 (L5)
After giving Ballarat a flogging the night before, the Devils were back in front of their home crowd the next day hosting their next door neighbors Altona. Not sure whether they were suffering a bit of let-down from their huge effort the night before, but they were never in the hunt against the Gators. Down 17-40 at half time, they got their shooting on target in the second half but the defence continued to leak, giving away 93 points which equaled their season high for points conceded.
* Cameron Hutton (15 points, 3 rebounds)
* TJ Remy (13 points, 5 rebounds)
* Josh Zamperoni (9 points, 2 rebounds)

Round 13, Saturday June 21
Werribee (7th) 96 defeated Keysborough (12th) 75 (WSFC)
1st 29-16 (W13)
2nd 23-13 (W10)
3rd 20-25 (L5)
4th 24-21 (W3)
The Devils bounced back from their disappointing showing against Altona the week before with a comfortable win over the Keysborough Cougars. The win was set up with an impressive first half which saw them hold a 23 point lead at half time. The Cougars showed some resistance in the third but the Devils consolidated in the last, resulting in a 21-point win. The Devils were on fire up the offensive scoring at least 20 points in each quarter to record their highest score of the season.
* TJ Remy, (16 points, 3 assists, 4 steals)
* Mark Luxford (16 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists)
* Josh Zamperoni (15 points, 6 rebounds)

Round 14, Saturday June 28
Werribee (7th) 60 defeated Geelong (10th) 57 (WSFC)
1st 10-13 (L3)
2nd 17-6 (W11)
3rd 16-22 (L6)
4th 17-16 (W1)
The Devils hadn’t put two wins together very often this season, and they were presented with an excellent opportunity to do so when they hosted Geelong. The home side got off to a sluggish start with a 10-point first term, but held Geelong to 6 in the second to take an 8-point lead at half time. The Supercats had been well-held, but broke free with a 22-point third quarter. The Devils still led going into the last quarter and held on for a three point escape victory.
* Mark Luxford, (17 points, 5 assists, 4 steals)
* Josh Zamperoni, (8 points, 8 rebounds)
* TJ Remy (7 points, 11 rebounds, 3 steals)
* Dylan Harberger (7 points, 10 rebounds)

Round 15, Saturday July 4
Werribee (7th) 46 lost to Whittlesea (2nd) 65 (Mill Park Basketball Stadium)
1st 11-14 (L3)
2nd 13-14 (L1)
3rd 11-25 (L14)
4th 11-12 (L1)
This was hardly a contest “for the ages.” The Devils did not play like a team vying for a finals spot and Whittlesea did not play like a team sitting second on the ladder. As so often happens, one bad quarter proved the difference for the Devils. Offensively, they had a shocker and were not able to score more than 13 points in a quarter. Having said that, if you take out the third quarter which Whittlesea won 25-11, there was only five points in it. The Devils 46 point total was their lowest for the season.
* Josh Zamperoni (14 points, 13 rebounds)
* Cameron Hutton (12 points, 9 rebounds)
* Travis Dale (9 points, 5 rebounds)

Sunday July 5
Werribee (7th) 62 lost to Camberwell (8th) 85 (WSFC)
1st 15-20 (L5)
2nd 15-19 (L4)
3rd 24-25 (L1)
4th 8-21 (L13)
This was a pivotal point in the season and was a massive missed opportunity. With everything to play for, a finals spot on the line and in front of the home crowd, the Devils fell to fellow finals contender Camberwell. Down by 10 at three-quarter time, they were outscored in the final term 21-8 and because of the season draw, they had to sit out Round 16 and rely on other results to go their way. As it turned out, Camberwell won their last four games to steal sixth spot on the ladder by a mere 3%.
* Travis Dale (13 points, 3 assists)
* Cameron Hutton (12 points, 4 rebounds)
* Mark Luxford (12 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists)

Round 17, Sunday July 19
Werribee (7th) 82 defeated Ballarat (12th) 58 (WSFC)
1st 22-17 (W5)
2nd 22-10 (W12)
3rd 14-12 (W2)
4th 24-19 (W5)
The Devils finished their season with a big win against Ballarat. They led all game and logged one of their biggest totals for the season. Unfortunately, due to inconsistency and missed opportunities, it wasn’t enough to earn a finals spot. They finished level with Camberwell and Bendigo on 11 wins, but missed out on percentage.
* TJ Remy (20 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals)
* Mark Luxford (17 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists)
* Travis Dale (15 points, 5 rebounds)
* Cameron Hutton (11 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals)
