Werribee Devils State Championship Men - 2015 Season Review

In 2015, the Werribee Devils senior men's basketball team competed in the State Championship division of the Big V competition. It was their third straight season in the top tier, led by coach Mark Hughes. The Devils started well, winning the first two games, but then came a horror 12 game losing streak, consigning this season to the "one to forget" basket.

The Devils won 5 out of 24 games and finished 13th. Below is a week-by-week summary of the season, as well as player and team stats.

Round 1, Saturday March 14
Werribee 76 d Whittlesea 55 (Mill Park Basketball Stadium)
1st
13-19 (L6)
2nd 24-11 (W13)
3rd 22-13 (W9)
4th 17-12 (W5)
The Devils season got off to a perfect start with a 21 point victory over Whittlesea. After trailing at quarter time they put together consistent performance for the rest of the game for a first-up win.

Top performers:
* Jonathan Sonda (20 points, 8 rebounds)
* David Cobb (10 points, 26 rebounds)
* Jordan Hughes (16 points, 4 assists)

Round 2, Saturday March 21
Werribee (3rd) 72 d McKinnon (8th) 67 (WSFC)
1st:
19-17 (W2)
2nd 16-20 (L4)
3rd 10-19 (L9)
4th 27-11 (W16)
The Devils made it two wins in a row with a narrow home victory over McKinnon. Behind at the last break, they came home with a huge last quarter to take the W.
Top performers:
* Jordan Hughes (33 points, 6 rebounds)
* David Cobb (10 points, 23 rebounds)
* Darcy Harding (13 points, 3 rebounds)

Round 3, Saturday March 28
Werribee (2nd) 72 lost to Eltham (8th) 84 (Eltham High School)
1st: 16-25 (L9)
2nd 17-19 (L2)
3rd 21-20 (W1)
4th 18-20 (L2)
The Devils lost their first game of the season on the road to Eltham. There wasn’t much in it, save for a sluggish first quarter and they just couldn’t bridge the gap.
Top performers:
* Jordan Hughes (23 points 4 rebounds)
* Darcy Harding (13 points 4 rebounds)
* David Cobb (12 points, 12 rebounds)

Sunday March 29
Werribee (3rd) 68 lost to Sherbrooke (9th) 72 (Belgrave Heights Christian School)
1st: 16-15 (W1)
2nd 18-26 (L8)
3rd 14-18 (L4)
4th 20-13 (W7)
The Devils fell in a narrow loss to Sherbrooke, who got on top in the middle stages of the game. Despite a positive 4th quarter, they couldn’t quite get over the line.
Top performers:
* Jordan Hughes (23 points, 6 rebounds)
* David Cobb (18 points, 16 rebounds)
* Anthony Luxford (9 points, 4 rebounds)

Round 4, Saturday April 11
Werribee (7th) 76 lost to Corio Bay (2nd) 79 (WSFC)
1st: 15-13 (W2)
2nd 34-25 (W9)
3rd 15-23 (L8)
4th 12-18 (L6)
Another narrow loss, this time at home to the Stingrays. An excellent second quarter set up an 11 point lead at half time, but the Stingrays gradually reeled it in during the second half, running over the top of the Devils in the final quarter for the win.
Top performers:
* Jordan Hughes (32 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals)
* Darcy Harding (13 points 5 rebounds)
* David Cobb (8 points, 17 rebounds, 3 blocks)

Round 5, Sunday April 19
Werribee (9th) 72 lost to Hume City (6th) 96 (Broadmeadows Basketball Stadium)
1st: 17-20 (L3)
2nd 19-28 (L9)
3rd 16-18 (L2)
4th 20-30 (L10)
Without big man David Cobb, the Devils trailed from start to finish against the Broncos and suffered their biggest loss of the season to this point. They were competitive during the first and third quarters, but the Hume City offence was just too good.
Top performers:
* Jordan Hughes (23 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists)
* Darcy Harding (19 points, 3 rebounds)
* Andrew Johnston (10 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists)

Round 6, Sunday April 26
Werribee (9th) 66 lost to Bulleen (4th) 68 (WSFC)
1st: 20-19 (W1)
2nd 10-15 (L5)
3rd 19-16 (W3)
4th 17-18 (L1)
The Devils recovered from their big loss against the Broncos, but suffered yet another narrow loss in front of the home crowd. The Devils won the first and third quarters, but trailed by one point at three quarter time. The final term was an arm wrestle which was won by Bulleen by the narrowest of margins, resulting in a two point win.
Top performers:
*Jordan Hughes (23 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists)
* Darcy Harding (16 points, 12 rebounds)
* Jonathan Sonda (10 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists)

Round 7, Saturday May 2
Werribee (9th) 64 lost to Diamond Valley (13th) 78 (Community Bank Stadium)
1st: 13-23 (L10)
2nd 25-13 (W12)
3rd 19-18 (W1)
4th 7-24 (L17)
A consistent four quarter effort was missing against Diamond Valley, resulting in another loss. The Devils controlled the game and were impressive in the middle stages but got off to a sluggish start and ran out of steam at the end. The final term in particularly would have been worrying, conceding 24 points while only scoring seven themselves.
Top performers:
*Jordan Hughes (25 points, 6 rebounds)
* Jonathan Sonda (17 points)
* David Cobb (14 rebounds)

Sunday May 3
Werribee (9th) 55 lost to Whittlesea (10th) 80 (WSFC)
1st: 10-14 (L4)
2nd 13-25 (L12)
3rd 14-21 (L7)
4th 18-20 (L2)
This was the Devils second game against Whittlesea for the season, with a completely opposite result. It was another game in which the Devils trailed from start to finish. This time they were competitive at the start and end, but the game got away from them in the middle stages, particularly the second quarter.
Top performers:
* Darcy Harding (13 points, 6 rebounds)
* Jordan Hughes (11 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists)
* Andrew Johnston (8 points, 2 rebounds)

Round 8, Saturday May 9
Werribee (10th) 69 lost to McKinnon (3rd) 86 (Bentleigh Secondary College)
1st: 17-25 (L8)
2nd 15-19 (L4)
3rd 26-23 (W3)
4th 11-19 (L8)
In their Round 2 clash, the Devils came from behind with a big last quarter to snatch the win. Unfortunately there would be no such result on this day. They trailed by nine at three quarter time, but McKinnon, assisted with the absence of Devils Cobb and Harding, made sure of the victory with some good defence, keeping the Devils to 11 points and squaring the season series at 1-1.
Top performers:
* Jordan Hughes (24 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists)
* Jonathan Sonda (14 points, 9 rebounds)
* Andrew Johnston (12 points, 8 rebounds)

Round 9, Saturday May 16
Werribee (10th) 67 lost to Ringwood (2nd) 108 (The Rings)
1st: 24-25 (L1)
2nd 11-33 (L22)
3rd 12-31 (L19)
4th 20-19 (W1)
The 41-point final margin may be misleading. In an all-too-familiar story, once again the Devils were competitive at the beginning and the end, but were simply outclassed in the middle stages of this contest. Ringwood had six players in double figures, shot 50% from the field, connected with 11 three-pointers and made 23 free throws.
Top performers:
* Darcy Harding (21 points, 4 rebounds)
* Jordan Hughes (10 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists)
* Andrew Johnston (10 points, 3 rebounds)

Sunday May 17
Werribee (10th) 75 lost to Waverley (4th) 121 (WSFC)
1st: 10-29 (L19)
2nd 24-26 (L2)
3rd 19-36 (L17)
4th 22-30 (L8)
The season hit a new low against Waverley. Just one day after losing by 40 out at Ringwood, the Devils came home to face the Falcons. A 10-29 first quarter set the tone of the match and the Devils were never going to recover from there. There were many things similar to the previous match. Waverley had six scorers in double figures, shot at over 50% (40-76) from the field and made 21 free throws. It was all just too easy.
Top performers:
* Darcy Harding (16 points, 7 rebounds)
* David Cobb (14 points, 12 rebounds)
* Jonathan Sonda (12 points, 8 rebounds)

Round 10, Saturday May 23
Werribee (12th) 73 lost to Hume City (7th) 84 (WSFC)
1st: 13-23 (L10)
2nd 18-27 (L9)
3rd 22-19 (W3)
4th 20-15 (W5)
The Devils were back at home the next week against the Broncos and were hoping to improve on the 24-point loss that came from their meeting earlier in the season. Things weren’t looking promising at half time, with the Devils trailing by 19. However, they managed to turn things around in the second half, winning the third and fourth quarters and even though it was still a loss, it wasn’t nearly as bad as it could have been.
Top performers:
* Jordan Hughes (20 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists)
* Darcy Harding (15 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists)
* David Cobb (8 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists)

Round 11, Saturday May 30
Werribee (13th) 74 lost to Melbourne (12th) 79 (MSAC)
1st: 20-25 (L5)
2nd 17-22 (L5)
3rd 20-18 (W2)
4th 17-14 (W3)
The losing streak extended to 12 when the Devils met fellow cellar-dwellers Melbourne at MSAC. Once again they produced one of their slow starts, trailing by 10 at half time. They won the second half but were not able to bridge the gap, finishing with a five point loss.
Top performers:
* Darcy Harding (24 points, 9 rebounds)
* Jordan Hughes (23 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists)
* Nick Morda (7 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists)

Sunday May 31
Werribee (13th) 80 defeated Diamond Valley (11th) 76 (WSFC)
1st: 22-16 (W6)
2nd 21-22 (L1)
3rd 23-17 (W6)
4th 14-21 (L7)
The Devils played their first game at the new Eagle Stadium, ironically against the Diamond Valley Eagles. From the start, the Devils looked in control and led basically the whole game. However, it had been so long since they had been in that position, one got the sense that the match wasn’t over until the final buzzer, regardless of the lead. The Eagles mounted a challenge in the final quarter but the Devils held on to record their first win since Round 2.
Top performers:
* Darcy Harding (31 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists)
* Jordan Hughes (19 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists)
* David Cobb (11 points, 19 rebounds, 3 blocks)

Round 12, Saturday June 13
Werribee (13th) 69 lost to Sherbrooke (10th) 83 (WSFC)
1st: 15-21 (L6)
2nd 19-18 (W1)
3rd 19-26 (L7)
4th 16-18 (L2)
The Devils were unable to back up their streak-breaking victory from the week before when they faced the Sherbrooke Suns at home.
*Jordan Hughes (22 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists)
* Darcy Harding (18 points, 6 rebounds)
* David Cobb (17 points, 13 rebounds)

Round 13, Saturday June 20
Werribee (13th) 82 defeated Hawthorn (9th) 71 (Boroondara Sports Complex)
1st: 22-17 (W5)
2nd 21-9 (W12)
3rd 20-20 (D)
4th 19-25 (L6)
The Devils grabbed their fourth win of the season when they defeated Hawthorn on their home turf. A great first half set up the win, particularly the second quarter when they held the Magic to 9 points.
Top performers:
* Darcy Harding (30 points, 8rebounds, 3assists)
* David Cobb (22 points, 12 rebounds, 3 steals)
* Jordan Hughes (14 points, 4 rebounds)

Round 14, Saturday June 27
Werribee (12th) 63 lost to Bulleen (6th) 83 (East Doncaster Secondary College)
1st: 12-23 (L11)
2nd 20-19 (W1)
3rd 17-22 (L5)
4th 14-19 (L5)
A sluggish start cost the Devils any chance of victory against Bulleen. Facing an early 11-point deficit, the Devils were unable to make any inroads on the scoreboard, eventually going down by 20.
Top performers:
* David Cobb (19 points, 13 rebounds, 3 blocks)
* Darcy Harding (18 points)
* Anthony Luxford (8 points, 2 rebounds)

Sunday June 28
Werribee (12th) 66 lost to Melbourne (13th) 85 (WSFC)
1st: 19-23 (L4)
2nd 12-18 (L6)
3rd 14-21 (L7)
4th 21-23 (L2)
The Devils finally got to play someone below them on the ladder when they met Melbourne at home. The Devils did not seem in the hunt and it was a disappointing day in front of the home crowd as the Tigers led from start to finish and ran away with a 19 point win.
Top performers:
* Darcy Harding (18 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists)
* David Cobb (17 points, 13 rebounds)
* Jordan Hughes (14 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists)

Round 15, Saturday July 4
Werribee (13th) 80 lost to Corio Bay (2nd) 89 (Viatek Geelong Basketball Netball Centre)
1st: 22-15 (W7)
2nd 21-29 (L8)
3rd 16-27 (L11)
4th 21-18 (W3)
The Devils put up a good effort when they faced 2nd placed Corio Bay. It was a consistent performance in which they led early but the Stingrays fought back to lead by one at the main break. The Devils let the Stingrays get away in the third quarter and were unable to peg them back, going down by nine points.
Top performers:
* Jonathan Sonda (26 points, 10 rebounds)
* Darcy Harding (19 points, 5 rebounds, 3 blocks)
* David Cobb (13 points, 16 rebounds)

Round 16, Saturday July 11
Werribee (13th) 79 lost to Hawthorn (9th) 83 (WSFC)
1st: 18-29 (L11)
2nd 17-24 (L7)
3rd 19-17 (W2)
4th 25-13 (W12)
The Devils came incredibly close to a miraculous victory against Hawthorn. The magic controlled the majority of the game. They led by 18 at half time and still held a two-digit lead with a minute to go. Somehow the Devils started forcing turnovers and making shots, getting within two points, but the Magic managed to hold on with a couple of free throws right at the death.
Top performers:
* Darcy Harding (31 points, 11 rebounds)
* David Cobb (16 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists)
* Jonathan Sonda (11 points, 12 rebounds, 2 blocks)

Sunday July 12
Werribee (13th) 79 lost to Waverley (3rd) 104 (Waverley Basketball Centre)
1st: 11-30 (L19)
2nd 11-24 (L13)
3rd 29-26 (W3)
4th 28-24 (W4)
A day after their near-comeback against Hawthorn, the Devils had to travel and back up with a contest with Waverley. They were off right from the start, scoring 11 points in each of the first two quarters and the defence was leaking, resulting in a 32-point half time deficit. They flicked the switch to the ‘on’ position in the second half, scoring 57 points and winning both quarters, but still came away with a 25 point loss.
Top performers:
* Jordan Hughes (15 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists)
* David Cobb (13 points, 11 rebounds)
* Cameron Hutton (13 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists)

Round 17, Sunday July 19
Werribee 93 lost to Ringwood 109 (WSFC)
1st: 24-23 (W1)
2nd 25-29 (L4)
3rd 22-33 (L11)
4th 22-24 (L2)
At the forefront of the Devils minds would have been avoiding a repeat of the 40 point shellacking they received from the Hawks earlier in the season. Werribee started well, leading by a point at quarter time. While they lost the next three quarters, the effort and endeavor was definitely there, they logged their highest score for the season (93) and were certainly not disgraced by a 16-point defeat.
Top performers:
* Jordan Hughes (28 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists)
* Darcy Harding (22 points, 5 rebounds)
* David Cobb (15 points, 14 rebounds, 4 steals)

Round 18, Saturday July 25
Werribee (13th) 78 defeated Eltham (7th) 68 (WSFC)
1st: 21-14 (W7)
2nd 15-13 (W2)
3rd 19-15 (W4)
4th 23-26 (L3)
The Devils season came to a close with a home victory against Eltham. Despite losing Darcy Harding two minutes into the match, Jordan Hughes more than made up for his absence, firing in 36 points. The Devils led all night and made sure they saw outgoing coach Mark Hughes off with a win, a positive way to end a disappointing season.
Top performers:
* Jordan Hughes (36 points, 9 rebounds)
* David Cobb (10 points, 13 rebounds)
* Jonathan Sonda (10 points, 13 rebounds)
