Werribee Devils Division One Women - 2015 Season Review

The Werribee Devils senior women's team had a tough season in Division One of the Big V competition in 2015. They struggled with inconsistency and had several losses against teams below them on the ladder. A mid-season coaching change made things more difficult.

The Devils finished with 6 wins and 14 losses, and were placed 9th on the ladder. Here is a week-by-week summary of the season, as well as team and player stats.

Round 1, Sunday March 15
Werribee 59 lost to Camberwell, 67 (Balwyn High School)

4th 17-23 (L6)
The Devils opened their season with an away game against the Dragons. They had a great first quarter, building an early 10-point lead. However, the Dragons gradually pegged back the deficit over the course of the game. The third quarter proved the difference, with the Devils only managing eight points.

The Devils hosted Mildura in Round 2 and lost in a nail-biter. In contrast to the previous week their start wasn’t as good and they conceded an early lead, but by half time things were all square. The Devils edged ahead at the last break but Mildura finished slightly stronger, getting the W.
* Alex Moss (22 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists)

The Devils clash with Whittlesea was a tale of two contrasting halves. Whittlesea had a slight advantage at half time but came out and blew the contest out of the water with a 25-11 third quarter. The final term wasn’t any better for the Devils, running out of steam and only managing nine points, going down by 32.
* Lydia Brooks (14 points, 5 rebounds)

* Lauren Conroy (9 points)
* Georgia Tauschke (9 points, 8 rebounds)

The Devils bounced back onto the winners list with an 11 point win over La Trobe City. The game was tight all the way. * Brittany Klaman (20 points, 3 assists)
* Katrina Vogelezang (14 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals)
* Alex Moss (13 points, 7 rebounds)

The Devils made it two wins on the trot with a seven-point victory over Sunbury. The home side had a narrow advantage in a low-scoring first half but in pleasing signs for the coaching staff, the Devils warmed up after half time, outscoring the opposition 42-31 and taking the points.
* Georgia Tauschke (17 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists)
* Lauren Conroy (14 points, 2 rebounds)
* Brittany Klaman (11 points, 4 assists, 5 steals)

Sunday April 19
Werribee (8th) 49 lost to Geelong (3rd) 67 (WSFC)
1st 16-16 (D)
2nd 17-21 (L4)
3rd 5-19 (L14)
4th11-11 (D)
Once again it was a case of one ordinary quarter costing the Devils the game as they took on Geelong in front of their home crowd. Geelong held a slight edge at the long break then came out after half time and kept the Devils to five points for the quarter, setting up an 18 point win. The defences ruled the final quarter, with both teams only managing 11 points.
* Brittany Klaman (14 points, 4 rebounds)
* Katrina Vogelezang (11 points, 11 rebounds)
* Alex Moss (10 points, 8 rebounds)

Round 6, Sunday April 26
Werribee (8th) 67 defeated Latrobe City (5th) 63 (Traralgon Basketball Stadium)

2nd 8-12 (L4)
3rd 22-16 (W6)
4th13-21 (L8)
The Devils made the trek out to Traralgon to face off against LaTrobe City for the second time in a month. They made a strong start, setting up an early lead but were pegged back in a low scoring second quarter. The Devils pulled away again in the third, but LaTrobe was not done with. Despite trailing by 12 they made a late charge, winning the quarter 21-13, but the Devils managed to hold on for a four-point win.
* Georgia Tauschke (18 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists)
* Brittany Klaman (17 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists)
* Lydia Brooks (12 points, 18 rebounds, 5 blocks)

Round 7, Saturday May 2
Werribee (7th) 58 lost to Westernport (10th) 84 (WSFC)
1st 15-14 (W1)
2nd 15-24 (L9)
3rd 14-22 (L8)
4th14-24 (L10)
It was a tough night at the office for the Devils when they faced Westernport on their home turf in Round 7. Despite leading by a point at quarter time, the rest of the game was forgettable. The Steelers defence allowed the Devils shooters no freedom and in contrast they scored relatively freely, increasing the lead at every break and finishing with a 26 point advantage.
* Lydia Brooks (12 points, 14 rebounds)
* Katrina Vogelezang (12 points, 5 rebounds)
* Georgia Tauschke (11 points, 8 rebounds)

Round 8, Saturday May 9
Werribee (7th) 50 lost to Keilor (10th) 71 (WSFC)
1st 11-9 (W2)
2nd 12-22 (L10)
3rd 16-14 (W2)
4th11-26 (L15)
The Devils fell to their second straight defeat and once again struggled offensively in their loss to Keilor at home. Just like the previous week they narrowly took the first quarter. Despite only managing 11 points, they kept the Thunder to 9. However, the visitors turned the tables in the second term, outscoring the Devils by 10 to take a half time lead. The Devils stayed in the contest, winning the third quarter but still trailed at the final break. The Thunder found an extra gear in the last, winning it 26-11 and ensuring a comfortable victory.
* Georgia Tauschke (15 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals)
* Katrina Vogelezang (9 points, 12 rebounds)
* Lydia Brooks (8 points, 14 rebounds, 3 assists)

Round 9, Saturday May 16
Werribee (9th) 85 defeated Hawthorn (11th) 67 (WSFC)
1st 28-18 (W10)
2nd 21-18 (W3)
3rd 18-7 (W11)
4th18-24 (L6)
After two big losses at home, the Devils received a confidence boost with a comfortable win over last-placed Hawthorn. Their 85 points was their highest score of the season and was back up with a defensively excellent third term, keeping the Magic to just seven points.
* Katrina Vogelezang (16 points, 9 rebounds)
* Brittany Klaman (16 points, 4 assists, 3 steals)
* Georgia Tauschke (15 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists)

Round 10, Saturday May 23
Werribee (7th) 61 lost to Craigieburn (9th) 68 (Craigieburn Leisure Centre)
1st 28-20 (W8)
2nd 10-17 (L7)
3rd 8-25 (L17)
4th15-6 (W9)
In stark contrast to the previous week, the third quarter proved to be the Devils undoing in their match against the Craigieburn Eagles. For the second week in a row they got off to a fast start, scoring 28 [points and building a lead. However their shooting went missing in the second quarter and by half time things were all square. The Eagles came out after halftime and broke the game open with a match-winning 25-8 quarter. The Devils fought back and won the final term 15-6, but it wasn’t enough as their inconsistent season continued.
* Alex Moss (
14 points, 2 rebounds)
* Brittany Klaman (13 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists)
* Lydia Brooks (12 points, 10 rebounds)

Round 11, Saturday May 30
Werribee (7th) 45 lost to Westernport (10th) 61 (The Steelerdome)
1st 6-28 (L22)
2nd 10-8 (W2)
3rd 11-12 (L1)
4th18-13 (W5)
The Devils travelled to the Steelerdome to take on Westernport for the second time this season. Unfortunately the result was the same, albeit slightly closer and a much lower scoring contest. It was looking like a long night when the Steelers opened up a 28-6 after the first quarter. To the Devils credit they did not let the game get away, winning two of the remaining quarters and keeping some respectability on the scoreboard. Their 45 points was their second-lowest score of the season and oit was their fourth loss against teams below them on the ladder..
* Georgia Tauschke (
11 points, 6 rebounds)
* Adele Giarrusso (8 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists)
* Brittany Klaman (8 points, 6 rebounds)

Round 12, Saturday June 13
Werribee (8th) 65 lost to Mildura (4th) 93 (Toyota Hothouse)
1st 12-19 (L7)
2nd 14-27 (L13)
3rd 23-20 (W3)
4th16-27 (L11)
The Devils travelled to Mildura for the first of three games against top four sides. It was a tough couple of weeks. Not much went right for the Devils, although they improved on their 45 points from the previous week. Mildura’s 93 points was the highest score conceded by the Devils all season
* Lydia Brooks (13 points, 9 rebounds)
* Katrina Vogelezang, (11 points, 6 rebounds)
* Kelly Richardson (8 points, 3 rebounds)

Round 13, Saturday June 20
Werribee (9th) 48 lost to Camberwell (2nd) 79 (WSFC)
1st 4-23 (L19)
2nd 15-9 (W6)
3rd 12-22 (L10)
4th17-25 (L8)
On a double header weekend the Devils faced 2nd-placed Camberwell Dragons at home. In their Round 1 match the Devils had been leading at half time before falling by eight points. This match was much more comprehensive, starting with a 23-4 first quarter. The Devils tried to fight back, winning the second quarter, but went missing in the second half, losing both quarters and finishing 31 points behind.
* Katrina Vogelezang (13 points, 6 rebounds)
* Lydia Brooks (10 points, 13 rebounds)
* Alex Moss (9 points, 4 rebounds)

Sunday June 21
Werribee (9th) 52 lost to Geelong (3rd) 81 (The Geelong Arena)
1st 11-17 (L6)
2nd 17-20 (L3)
3rd 15-22 (L7)
4th9-22 (L13)
After losing by 30 to the Dragons the night before, the Devils travelled down the highway and came up against 3rd-placed Geelong. They came away with an almost-identical result, although this time it was more gradual. They lost the first three quarters by single figures but were outclassed in the final term, only managing nine points. It was the Devils fifth straight loss.
* Brittany Klaman (12 points, 2 rebounds)
* Georgia Tauschke (11 points, 2 rebounds, 3 blocks)
* Lydia Brooks (8 points, 14 rebounds, 4 blocks),

Round 14, Saturday June 27
Werribee (10th) 84 defeated Hawthorn (11th) 74 (Boroondara Sports Complex)
1st 23-20 (W3)
2nd 9-16 (L7)
3rd 30-27 (W3)
4th22-11 (W11)
After a tough few weeks, I’m guessing it was with some relief that the Devils saw the Hawthorn Magic up next on their season fixture. Not suggesting over-confidence, but it was their best opportunity for a win for some time. In fact, their last win was against the Magic back in Round 9. The Devils opened up a slight advantage, but the Magic got on top in the second, taking a four point lead into the main break. The third quarter was a high scoring affair narrowly won by the Devils, but they still trailed by a point heading into the last quarter. Much to everyone’s relief, the Devils played the game out well, taking out a much-needed win.
* Alex Moss (23 points, 6 rebounds)
* Lydia Brooks (15 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks)
* Georgia Tauschke, (11 points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals, 4 blocks)

Round 15, Saturday July 4
Werribee (9th) 63 lost to Sunbury (8th) 73 (WSFC)
1st 12-13 (L1)
2nd 14-18 (L4)
3rd 26-24 (W2)
4th11-18 (L7)
The Devils had a perfect opportunity to string together two wins in a row when they hosted Sunbury, who were sitting just above them on the ladder. The Devils won their contest earlier in the season. The first half was tightly contested, with Sunbury holding a narrow lead. The tempo increased in the third quarter and it was a freer, higher-scoring contest. The game was up for grabs in the last but the Devils could only manage 11 points, giving Sunbury a 10-point win.
* Katrina Vogelezang (21 points, 5 rebounds)
* Lauren Conroy (14 points, 7 rebounds)
* Brittany Klaman (11 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists)

Round 16, Saturday July 11
Werribee (9th) 54 lost to Whittlesea (1st) 79 (Mill Park Basketball Stadium)
1st 15-29 (L14)
2nd 11-21 (L10)
3rd 15-15 (D)
4th13-14 (L1)
Once again, the Devils showdown against top-of-the-ladder Whittlesea was a game of contrasting halves. The match was effectively over at halftime with the Pacers up by 24, but the Devils acquitted themselves well in the second half, restricting the Pacer attack and limiting the scoreboard damage.
* Lauren Conroy (18 points, 3 rebounds)
* Georgia Tauschke (12 points, 3 rebounds)
* Katrina Vogelezang (6 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals)

Round 17, Sunday July 19
Werribee (9th) 39 lost to Keilor (6th) 67 (Keilor Basketball Stadium)
1st 10-21 (L11)
2nd 6-13 (L7)
3rd 11-21 (L10)
4th 12-12 (D)
The Devils match against Keilor was one that neither team will be in a hurry to relive. Shooting percentage did not get above 40% and the Devils’ 39 points was their lowest for the season.  Keilor increased their lead in each of the first three quarters and the Devils managed to salvage a draw in the last.
* Georgia Tauschke (10 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists)
* Kelly Richardson (7 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks)
* Katrina Vogelezang (7 points, 5 rebounds)

Round 18, Sunday July 26
Werribee (10th) 60 defeated Craigieburn (9th) 54 (WSFC)
1st 26-6 (W20)
2nd 6-14 (L8)
3rd 13-19 (L6)
4th 15-15 (D)
The Devils final game for the season was at home against the Craigieburn Eagles who were sitting just above them on the ladder. The Devils started magnificently, opening up a 20 point lead and keeping the Eagles to just six points for the quarter (none of which were field goals!). It meant that if the Eagles were to have any chance they would be playing catch-up. However, ‘play catch-up’ they did and the Devils found their early lead slowly being whittled away during the middle stages of the game. The Eagles even got within two points late in the last quarter but the Devils held their nerve to finish with a six point win.
* Brittany Klaman (15 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals)
* Georgia Tauschke (13 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists)
* Lydia Brooks (6 points, 13 rebounds, 4 steals)
