The Werribee Devils Youth League Women travelled down to Geelong to take on the Corio Bay Stingrays for their Round 3 clash as they went searching for their first win of the season. The Stingrays had an impressive first couple of rounds, beating Coburg by 25 then handing Craigieburn a 116-53 belting.

First Quarter (Werribee 24, Corio Bay 21)
Eliza Herne 9 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals
Natasha Currao 5 points
Hayley Jones 5 points
Tori Kalos 2 steals

Given the two teams contrasting start to the season, it would have been understandable if the Devils had come out with some nerves or trepidation about what would happen. As it turned out, the opposite was true as Eliza Herne, Natasha Currao and Taylah Lea got the Devils on the board early. They matched it with the Stingrays danger players Tahlia and Teagan Tatlock and captain Tamara Knox. The lead changed several times and neither side led by more than three points. Hayley Jones hit the last five points of the quarter, giving the visitors a three point lead at quarter time.

Second Quarter (Werribee 15, Corio Bay 16) HT 39-37
Rachel Miller 4 points
Eliza Herne 3 points
six individual scorers
Maeghan Ridder 3 rebounds,
Shae Beckworth & Lauren Tipper 2 rebounds
Tori Kalos 2 assists

Both teams took a while to get going in the second term, and Tori Kalos put the Devils on the board, but Elisha Montgomery, Alexandra Drake and Madeline Hinkley combined to put the Stingrays back in front three minutes into the quarter. Four points to Rachel Miller gave the Devils back a narrow lead, before Herne scored in between a pair of Stingray baskets to Hinkley and Meg Hanna, and at the halfway point of the quarter it was all tied up. Maeghan Ridder’s 20 point game gave her a starting spot against the Stingrays, and she finally got on the board with a pair of free throws with four minutes to go. Shae Beckworth joined in with a layup, and Herne gave the Devils their biggest lead of the match. The two teams traded baskets in the last two minutes, with Tayla Reid and Hanna scoring for the Stingrays and Darcy Alfred getting one back for the visitors. At the half time buzzer, the Devils managed to go into the long break with a two point lead, 39-37.

Third Quarter (Werribee 14, Corio Bay 29) 3QT 53-66
Shae Beckworth 4 points
Hayley Jones 3 points, 2 rebounds
six individual scorers
Maeghan Ridder 2 rebounds
Eliza Herne 2 blocks

Hanna tied the game up for the Stingrays in the first 30 seconds of the term, before Miller restored the Devils lead. The Stingrays attempted to start building a lead, scoring seven unanswered points before Currao kept the Devils in touch. Kelsey Jordan, Knox and Tatlock extended the Stingrays lead further and then Ridder put one in for the Devils. Two free throws to Tatlock were answered by a Hayley Jones three-pointer, then Jordan and Tatlock hit consecutive jumpshots to consolidate the Stingray’s advantage. Beckworth brought the Devils within seven points, then a 7-1 Stingrays run late in the quarter took the margin out to double figures at three-quarter time.

Fourth Quarter (Werribee 12, Corio Bay 27) FT 65-93
Darcy Alfred 4 points
Shae Beckworth 3 rebounds
Lauren Tipper 2 rebounds

Despite a positive and competitive first half, unfortunately for the Devils they were run over by the Stingrays in the last quarter. Free throws to Currao and Alfred were the only scores the visitors could manage in the first seven minutes, while the home side added 20 points in that time, extending their lead to 30. Lea, Herne and Alfred all managed field goals late in the game for the visitors who, at 0-3, have another tough matchup in Round 4 against the top-placed Warrandyte Venom.
