In
Round 17 the Werribee Devils Youth League Women (3rd, 12-7) travelled to take on the
Camberwell Dragons (5th, 6-12). The Dragons scored first but were immediately answered by
Taylah Lea (two points, two rebounds) and Alex Moss (two points, five rebounds). Moss’s basket gave the Devils the lead briefly, but
the Dragons soon regained the advantage and held it for the rest of the
quarter. The biggest margin of the quarter was just four points and a Jenna
Thomas free throw reduced the deficit to three at quarter time. Charlotte
Vincent-Lord had four points for the Devils, while Tegan Hindle grabbed two rebounds.
Doyle (three points) and Moss (five points, five rebounds) opened the scoring for the Devils in the second term, giving them the lead and for the next few minutes the two teams went goal-for-goal and the lead changed hands several times. The final four minutes were like a rollercoaster, with both teams gaining, then losing, the ascendancy. After Moss scored a couple of free throws, putting the Devils up by two with 4.40 to play, the Dragons went on an 11-1 run, opening an eight point lead with 1.54 remaining. From there, Moss, Vincent-Lord (five points, two rebounds) and Doyle combined for the last six points of the quarter to get back within two points at half time. Natasha Currao also contributed three points and two rebounds.
The third term started well enough for the Devils. Vincent-Lord and Moss (four points, four rebounds) scored first and the Devils continued their momentum from the previous quarter, hitting the lead. However, from there they only scored one more basket for the entire quarter and the Dragons added 14 points, giving them a double digit lead at three-quarter time. Doyle grabbed three rebounds.
Starting with an 11-point deficit after a 5-point quarter, it was always going to be a big ask for the Devils. Moss and Doyle (three rebounds) briefly got the margin back to single digits, but ultimately they were unable to make up any ground on the scoreboard. Back-to-back three-pointers from Purcell pushed the margin out to 15, and Currao scored the final three points of the game as the Devils finished 12 points adrift. Lea was busy with two assists and three rebounds.

To finish the regular season, the Werribee Devils Youth League Women (4th, 12-8) travelled to take on top-placed Warrandyte Venom (1st, 17-3). Sitting several games clear in fourth, the Devils were assured of a finals spot but needed to win to go ahead of third-placed Coburg Giants.
The first quarter was a low-scoring affair early on. Tegan Hindle started the Devils off well, then Charlotte Vincent-Lord (two rebounds), Alex Moss (two points, four rebounds) and Natasha Currao (four points) helped the Devils out to a 7-2 lead. Taylor, Caruana and Locke all scored in the space of a minute for the Venom, giving the home side the lead. Teaghan Doyle (four points) scored a couple of baskets and Currao nailed two free throws while denying the Venom a field goal in the final three minutes, resulting in a one-point Devils lead at quarter time. Taylah Lea grabbed four rebounds.
The Devils quarter time lead turned out to be the last time they would hold the lead for the rest of the match. Locke scored for the Venom and this was answered by four points from Rachel Miller, which were the only Devils points in the first six minutes of the quarter. The Venom struggled to put points on the board as well, and when Eliza Herne scored as she was fouled and converted the free throw, scores were level with four minutes to play. For the rest of the quarter the Venom went on a 9-2 run, giving them a seven point lead at half time. Doyle and Herne grabbed three rebounds each.
The third quarter broke the game open. The Venom scored the first seven points of the quarter, which doubled their lead. Apart from a late Jenna Thomas free throw, Vincent-Lord (eight points, four rebounds) was the only Devils scorer for the quarter while the Venom added 23, and a 21-point margin at the last break was the result. Other contributors for the Devils included Hindle and Moss with three rebounds each and Currao had two steals.
The Devils needed to make something happen, and Doyle and Lea scored the first four points of the final term. However, everything the Devils tried was answered by the Venom. Those four points were immediately answered by Caruana. A basket from Herne and a free throw from Currao were met with a three-pointer from Locke. Two free throws from Hindle (four points, three steals) received a quick reply from Heath. Finally the Devils strung six unanswered points together, and then the Venom struck back with four from MacDonald and Feller. Late points from Miller and Steph Pyke (three) ensured the Devils won the quarter, but they still finished 16 points shy. Vincent-Lord had four points for the quarter, while Lauren Tipper grabbed four rebounds
The Devils finished the regular season in fourth place, and in a case of deja vu, they face a semi-final against their Round 18 opponents Warrandyte Venom. It will take place in Warrandyte on Saturday August 6th, at 7.00pm.
