In Round 17 the Werribee Devils Division One Women (10th, 3-15) played their last home game for the season. It was always going to be a tough one, against the undefeated top side Sunbury Jets (1st, 17-0).
The Jets started with the first six points of the game, before Bex Van Kuyk (seven rebounds) answered with a basket for the Devils and Jessica Slade (three points, three rebounds) added a free throw. The Jets outscored the Devils 8-1 over the next few minutes before Slade put in a basket with 0.46 on the clock. A three-pointer from Duever and a basket from Stevens in the last thirty seconds hurt the Devils and meant a 19-6 Jets lead at quarter time.
Slade scored early on for the Devils but it was a Jets avalanche, as Stevens opened with a three and then Mahady scored 13 points in three minutes before Nicole Greene and Doni Lewis got the Devils to double figures. Bygate and Darby added baskets and Stevens knocked down a three before Jackie Silcock got on the scoreboard and the Devils went into half time with a 30-point deficit. Jasmine Silcock grabbed three rebounds, while Van Kuyk and Greene had two each.
Van Kuyk (four points, two rebounds) scored the only Devils basket in the first half of the quarter as the Jets poured in 15 points of their own. There were some promising signs late in the quarter with Slade (three rebounds) scoring five points and Greene contributing four, but when Phelan scored a three just before the buzzer, the Devils found themselves 47 points down with a quarter to play.
Silcock (five points) and Lewis opened the scoring for the Devils and the Jets didn’t get on the board until four minutes into the quarter. Once they did, though, it was brutal, scoring 10 points in 40 seconds and getting the margin beyond 50. Van Kuyk (two rebounds, two steals) scored six points late in the game for the Devils, while Bygate (six) and Mahady (five) kept the scoreboard ticking over for the Jets.
The loss was the Devils second biggest and their 41-point total was their lowest for the season.

The Werribee Devils Division One Women (10th, 3-16) finished off their season with a road trip to coach Mahaela Jackson’s old stomping ground, Mildura, to take on the Heat (6th, 10-9).
Things didn’t look good from the start, with the Heat jumping to an 11-0 lead in the first 90 seconds. Jessica Slade (six points, three rebounds) got one back for the Devils, but the Heat didn’t let up, scoring another 10 unanswered points to increase their lead to 21-2 after just four minutes of play. Slade and Nicole Greene fought back for the Devils and things quietened down late in the quarter, with the Heat scoreless for three minutes. Jackie Silcock and Bex Van Kuyk (three rebounds) scored in the last minute but a couple of Ali Gloyd free throws made the margin 33-11 in favour of the home side at quarter time. Jasmine Silcock grabbed three rebounds.
A 7-0 start to the Heat in the first two minutes of the second term was countered by baskets from Slade (five points, five rebounds) and Silcock (five points). Slade added another one and Greene (three points, two rebounds) and Van Kuyk (four points) helped the Devils on a 14-2 streak and all of a sudden the margin was back below 20. The two sides went goal-for-goal late in the term, and free throws from Kirsty Neeves and Silcock helped the Devils to win the quarter and go into half time with some confidence.
The Devils committed themselves well again in the third quarter, with the Heat unable to get any real momentum or ascendancy, apart from what they already had. Silcock (five points, two rebounds), Doni Lewis (five points) and Van Kuyk (three points) all contributed on the scoreboard and while the Heat increased their lead, they weren’t having things all their own way. Lauren Conroy grabbed three rebounds and Greene had a couple of steals.
Unfortunately for the Devils, the game finished as it started – with a Heat rampage. Gloyd and Power pushed the Heat’s lead beyond 30 in the first minute of the last term, and they just had too many bursts of unanswered points throughout the quarter, in particular a 10-0 run in the final three minutes. Greene led the Devils scorers with four points, while Van Kuyk (four rebounds), Slade (two rebounds) and Neeves each had two points for the quarter.
