The Werribee Devils State Champ Men (9th, 8-12) were going for four wins in a row when they hosted the Eltham Wildcats (6th, 11-8) in Round 17. The first half was evenly contested, with the Wildcats holding a single-digit lead for most of the time. Jeremy Smith (seven points, three rebounds), Jordan Hughes (seven points, two rebounds) and Fred Hunter (seven points, two blocks) all featured heavily in the first term. The visitors led by six with 1.39 remaining, but Smith, Hughes and Hunter all scored in the last minute to make it a one point game at quarter time.

Hughes scored first in the second quarter, giving the Devils the lead briefly. However the Wildcats immediately got their noses back in front and did enough to maintain their single-digit buffer for the rest of the quarter. With a couple of minutes to go they led by eight points, but a free throw from Sonda and Dion Jewell’s (six points, two steals) second three-pointer of the quarter got the Devils back within four. Two late free throws gave Eltham a six point lead at the main break.
Hunter also had six points for the quarter and Smith contributed four points, two assists and two rebounds.

The Wildcats started better in the third quarter, outscoring the Devils 10-4 in the first three minutes and opening up a 12-point lead. However, the home side fought back with an 11-2 streak of their own over the next four minutes and the margin was back to three points. Hughes brought the Devils within two with a minute to play, but two three-pointers up the other end made it a six point game at three-quarter time. Hunter and Smith put in six points each, while Sonda added four points and three rebounds and Jewell gave away a couple of assists.

It was still anyone’s game as the final term got underway, and there was no indication of the storm to come. In a brutal four minutes of basketball the Wildcats outscored the Devils 20-0, including 11 points from Adam Moore, and the game was over. Hunter (three points, two assists, four rebounds), Ward (three points) and Hughes soon got on the board for the demoralized Devils, but whatever they did was answered back up the other end. Another 6-0 run pushed the margin beyond 30. In an entertaining final 30 seconds Dion Jewell (nine points) and Jordan Canovan scored two three-pointers each in a mini-shootout, but by then it was too late, as the Devils late-season winning streak came to an end.

Jordan Hughes - 10 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals
Nick Morda - 9 rebounds, 3 assists

The Werribee Devils State Champ Men (9th, 8-13) finished their 2016 season at home against the Ringwood Hawks (4th, 15-6).

The Hawks jumped out of the blocks, opening up a 13-2 lead in three minutes, with five individual contributors. Fred Hunter (two assists, three rebounds) scored the Devils only points during this time, then Jack Macdonald (seven points), Jeremy Smith (eight points, two rebounds) and Nick Morda led a 9-3 Devils fightback. Nathan Champion score five points in quick time for the Hawks but baskets from Jordan Hughes (two steals), Smith and Macdonald made it a five point ball game. Snowball and Champion hit back for the Hawks before Smith landed a three-pointer with a minute to play. Latham scored the last basket of the quarter for the Hawks, giving them a nine-point advantage at quarter time.

The Devils started better in the second term, with Jonathan Sonda, Hunter (four points) and Smith (three points, three rebounds, two assists) all featuring heavily. Once the Hawks got on the board they blew the game wide open with a 17-2 blitz in the space of five minutes, and once again they had five contributors without any one player being dominant. Nick Morda was the only Devils scorer during this period. Hunter and Smith finally scored for the Devils, before the Hawks finished with the last six points of the quarter to take a handy 21-point lead into half time.

The start of the third quarter resembled a good old-fashioned shootout and when the smoke cleared and the dust settled, 27 points were scored in four minutes and it was just about a dead-heat. On the Hawks side, Logan Lyle scored three three-pointers in under two minutes, while for the Devils Macdonald had five points and Hunter (three assists, two rebounds) had four. Having said that, as fun as it was to watch, the Devils ended up gaining nothing on the scoreboard and still found themselves trailing by over 20 points. Things settled down considerably in the remaining six minutes of the quarter. The teams traded baskets until the Hawks outscored the Devils 6-2 in the final minute to win the quarter and increase their already comfortable lead. Hughes put in six points for the Devils, Smith had four points and three rebounds, while Sonda grabbed three rebounds.

Champion opened the final term for the Hawks with four points, and the Devils took over two minutes to get on the scoreboard. Smith (10 points), Hunter (six points, five rebounds), Ward (two rebounds), Morda (three points, two assists, six rebounds) and Jewell (three assists) all featured in a 12-4 Devils run in the middle stages of the quarter, and an additional eight points from Smith (six) and Hunter (two) in the final two minutes meant the Devils won the quarter and got the final margin below 20, with the score of their last game for 2016 being 79-98.

The Devils finished the season in 9th position with 8 wins and 14 losses.
