Whilst the Werribee Devils Youth League Men suffered a huge loss Saturday night, it would be remiss of us to not acknowledge that this was Liam Paul’s last home game ever with his Youth family. Liam began playing Youth League in 2012, and whilst he was acknowledged for his 50th game only last year, due to system glitches he has in fact clocked up 91 games.

In a career littered with injuries, it has been his loyalty, determination and leadership that have been the pinnacles of his playing style. Liam faced a hard road back to basketball after a serious footy accident in 2010, but showed the courage and determination he now uses to put his body on the line for his team. He has been a part of the representative program at Werribee from 2009, and has kept up his involvement through coaching in the junior program.

Starting was never a certainty and minutes never guaranteed. However you accepted what you got, and never publicly expressed your disappointment when you didn’t take to the court at all. Instead, you were the first to encourage your teammates and provide words of wisdom. When you made it onto the court you gave nothing less than 110%. You’re a selfless player not interested in personal stats or fancy plays.  Hard working, your number one priority was teamwork to achieve wins at all cost through guidance of younger team members especially. You epitomize what a true sportsperson looks like.  It has truly been an honour to watch you grow as an individual player and help shape the greatness that has been displayed by this season's group.

Not sure what lies ahead for you, but your presence will certainly be missed on game day. We hope that a championship can become a reality, as there is nothing like being part of something great, that you have played a major part in.
